33 and 34: Swimmy Writing picture books

The first one of these books is a book I remember as a child. In fact, I remember reading many of this author’s books, and loving them so much. Even when I was way too old for them, I’d seek them out and read them over again. This was one of my all time favorites. I think I really identified with the main character. The second book was recommended in another book I was reading, and is a bit longer, but is one that I ran out and bought. Literally. I paced around my local bookstore, knowing they only had one. I’ve got this kind of snatch grab that I make for a book when I really want it. I think it’s comical when seen from the outside, but when I reach for that book, I am really desperate, and I really want it. So I’m happy that I own this book so I can look at it any old time.

Books 33 and 34 in Reading Journal are:
Swimmy by Leo Lionni
and
Writing Picture Books by Ann Whitford Paul

Swimmy

  • Think of other things that Swimmy and his new found friends at the end of the book can make out of themselves.
  • Write more to the story about what happens to Swimmy and his new friends after they get past the big fish. What’s over there?
  • Make some collage pictures, inspired by Leo Lionni.

What is there to say about Writing Picture Books? Well, buy it if you want to write picture books. And make sure you have some highlighters and your printer ready; you’re gonna need them!
