The Happy Birthday Book Club, year 1.

I love my sister.
She’s my only one.

For once we are wearing the same thing!
For once we are wearing the same thing!

And for part of the year, we’re a little bit closer.

Ok, maybe not this close, but here we are a few years back, fitting into a huge shirt and huge shorts together.

That part of the year will come soon, today, in fact.
And from January 4th to April 5th, we are only one year apart.

My sister and I are VERY different from each other.
And that’s why we get along so well.

She LOVES beige and gray.
I LOVE bright orange and pink.

She can be very serious.
I am often very silly.

She never reads.
I read all the time.

Never reads?
You’re shocked, clearly.
Trust me, I was too.

Where I love to read any and all books under the sun, Debbie doesn’t.
She reads lots of business books, and magazines.
But not too many books.

When I asked her why, she said, “Well, I never know if something is going to be good.”
I recommended Kirkus reviews.
I told her to go to the library.
I would say go to the local bookstore but there isn’t one where she lives.

So I took it upon myself to do something about that.
This is where the Happy Birthday Book Club comes in.

I vow, starting this year, to get my sister a book every year for her birthday.
And I’m going to put some time and effort into finding it.

My sister thought this was a great idea,
mostly because, before this,
I never got her anything.

She’s kind of picky though.
For one, she doesn’t like sci-fi.
I KNOW!
That means no Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings.
Probably not even Narnia.

For another thing, she likes to read more adult stuff.
Or at least young adult.
See, I’m a bit out of my league here.

But, I read adult books from time to time.
And young adult books from time to time as well.

So this year I picked out two.
I also collaged these fun bookplates inside the book, that way she HAS to keep them!

So, The Happy Birthday Book Club selections for this year are:

Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli
Birthday Bookclub 2013 Stargirl 1
and The Time Traveler’s Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger
Birthday Bookclub 2013 Time traveler's wife

We’ll see if she likes them.
I have a similar birthday club with my brother in law, her husband.
Only in involves different kinds of beer that we like.

Anyone else have a birthday tradition?
I hope this one goes on for a long time!

One more picture of Debbie and I. Yes, I was Clifford. That's a whole 'nother story.

(Singe Singe is grumbling that he doesn’t get anything for his birthday….well, I’ll just have to remember when it is!)

Until next time, enthusiastically yours,
KE and SS
