31 in 31 Day 11: My Blue is Happy

31What’s your favorite color?
As a kid, mine was red, red RED!
I was a bossy little thing,
and loved the power red had.
I never once thought of it as an angry color;
just as a color that got things done and was brave!

As I’m getting older,
I realize why I liked red so much.
I’m a go-getter, a person who likes to lead and be in control.
But these days I feel more yellow,
more shiny and bright,
and sometimes a little more green,
peaceful, calm, and growing.

How do you feel about colors?
This book is GREAT for talking about that with kids!

Love this illustration. Great use of color, shadows, and putting everything in that the character’s talking about!

This is actually the first spread in the book. I love how it shows both sides of blue, and the joy of diving in the water! Water is really hard to illustrate, and this looks great!

I love that this book introduces similes to kids!

I bet they will want to right away right down what they feel about the colors.

It also talks about opposites, and how it’s ok to disagree and have your own idea about something.

The illustrations are dazzling! I love the colors and how both viewpoints of the color are represented in one illustration!

The text is simple and sweet, to the point yet poetic. I’m so excited to hear there are more books coming out for Jessica Young in the next few years!

Learns:
You are allowed to look at things your own way. Actually, it’s almost always better when you do

Something that makes someone feel one way can make someone else feel a different way. There’s no right or wrong about it; it’s just opinion. I think this is VERY important to remember when rejections come in. Sure, sometimes a piece of work is just not done, not at the level it needs to be at, but other times people aren’t connecting to it for some reason. I think the challenge we have as writers and illustrators is to try to convey SO MUCH in so little space, try to get that connection right away, and sometimes it doesn’t work because maybe one editor just has a thing against talking trees for some reason (this is not a real life example…I don’t have a story about talking trees….yet!)

How do you feel about colors? I think it would be fun to explore!
What did you read today?

Up to 36 books in the spreadsheet! Thank you again for taking the time to do that, everyone!

Happy Saturday! I’m off to a wedding for a good friend,
plus I’m not driving there, so I get to read in the car on the way!
Currently reading: Afterworlds by Scott Westerfield
Have you heard of it?
It’s about a high schooler who writes a draft during NaNoWriMo and then, after editing, lands a literary agent and a huge six figure two book deal. The book is her story (the writer’s) of living in NY, with every other chapter being her book (the manuscript that landed her the contract) and the format is so interesting. I’m lovin’ it!

See ya tomorrow!
