Real Life Writer Report

This is the Real Life Writer Report
for the week starting Monday, May 25th
and ending Sunday, May 31st.
(Yes, it’s a brain new idea. I’ll write a post about why I wanted to do it soon! For now, here it is!)

Monday:
-Spent 15 minutes re-formatting a manuscript and adding illo notes. This was retyping some words, adding bold and italics, spacing things out, and writing new illo notes.

-334 words free-writing

-Read one story I wrote (How to Handle A Burrito) aloud to my friends (ages 7 and 10)

Tuesday:
-25 minutes re-formatting a manuscript and adding illo notes.(see above)

-Exciting phone call concerning a manuscript consultation. I will be set up with a great editor, and I got a compliment on my manuscript!

-Exciting email about the direction of my freelance project. Right now it’s a rough outline, and my goal is to have the rough draft done by the end of this week.

-Came up with this blogpost idea. That totally counts!

-Corrected the Portuguese in my Samba manuscript. I was lucky enough to have one of my friends look it over. There’s still a bit we’re not sure about, so we’re asking her fiancé, a native Brazilian 🙂

-521 words free write.
Funny Gem:

This is how we do it.
It’s Tuesday night,
And I feel all right.
Hanging out here on the east side.
I ate some pasta and my lunch is packed,
Going to bed at 10:30 cuz sleep deprivation is wack,
Write a few words first though;
Then reflect in my five minute journal.

Wednesday:
-Read for a half hour at work, at lunch.

-Read another 40 minutes when I got home.

-Wrote an email and sent it out to my editor.

-591 words in a free write.

Gem:

I want to make so many things.
I want to make things that allow people to connect to one another,
To say things they wouldn’t otherwise say,
To feel things they otherwise wouldn’t feel.
I want to make art that makes people smile and talk.
I want to write stories that stir the hearts of people.
I want to encourage kids.
I want them to know that they can do anything and they’re awesome people.
I want to be loud and quiet one right after the other,
So no one knows exactly what I really am,
They just know that I can be both and that’s ok.

Thursday:
-Read at work for 30 minutes at lunch/before work.

-914 words in a free write.

Friday:
-Read at work for 30 minutes, then at home for 30 minutes.

-658 words free write.

-Wrote 7 “word a day” posts for Instagram.
Example of an old one (I’ll be cataloging them on the blog soon!)

Saturday:
-30 minutes reading and brainstorming about an email from my editor on the freelance project with Disney.

-One hour writing out a rough draft for that project. (542 words)

Sunday:
-Read for two hours this morning (Started and finished a new book!)

-541 words, free write.

Reflections on this week:

Whew.
It was a busy one.
I had Monday off, but helped out friends, which was great.
The rest of the week was pretty full with work,
and I’m working on some art projects on the side too.

I’m really happy with what I got done this week,
especially the draft for the freelance project.
I had to MAKE myself write for that hour,
even though I was itching to check Instagram,
or draw something,
or do ANYTHING really.

I knew I would be happier when it was done, and I was right!
We’ll see what this next week brings!
And yay, June!

Bye for now,
Kathy Ellen
