Behind the page: Stanley

Note:
This is a behind the scenes look at a coloring page I made for a reward for people who donate to my NaNoWriMo Night of Writing Dangerously fund.

Yesterday on my lettering blog
I showed you how I made this coloring sheet.
Today I’m talking about the book that it came from,
STANLEY.

First, I am deeply and madly in love with the work
of Syd Hoff.
I grew up with it; my mom was a first grade teacher
And I CAN READ books were her JAM!

I always had a soft spot in my heart for Stanley,
and re-reading it as an adult, I can see why.
Stanley is different than the other cavemen.
He likes art, and plants, and animals, and the finer things.

And for this, he gets rejected by the other cavemen.
As he finds a new place to live, he’s happier,
and he even sees those cavemen again, with unexpected results.

Stanley is himself,
and he doesn’t care who cares about it.
I think I identified with Stanley, even as a kid.
I had an inkling that I was a wonderful little weirdo.

I love when there are wonderful weirdos in children’s books.
It builds empathy at a young age, and weirdos are great characters!

(I say weirdos in a very loving way; I think everyone is a weirdo in one way or another. Life would be boring if we weren’t, right?)

Ok, let me read it to you!
