Introducing I MADE IT Monday: Things that I make, often with tutorials.
First up, READ letters inspired by pinterest.
Here’s what I made:
And they were inspired by this picture (and below) on my Craft Ideas Pinterest board. That tutorial is here.
I liked the LOVE, but wanted something a little more dear to my heart.
Ok, it’s not that I don’t like LOVE! but I wanted something functional too.
And honestly, I came across this while cleaning my room:
A sketchbook! You say.
What does that have to do with anything?
Look carefully at the coil my friend.
See, I’m all for going to the store and getting stuff to make something, but I am also ALL FOR using up stuff that I was just going to throw away.
And I was just going to throw this away.
I had ripped all the pages out and now there were just the boards. I kept the boards to use as backing for something (the crafter’s way) and while I was pulling out the coil, I saw how nicely it bent and thought…”I could do that yarn wrapping thing!”
So I fashioned a few letters and tried it.
The good/bad thing about this coil is if you bent it too much, it would break. This was nice, because I didn’t have to have wire cutters, but hard because I kept making mistakes with the cursive version. I was going to give up, but I loved my R!
So I decided to just do separate letters.
But the coil/wire looked a bit scraggly, so I wanted to bulk up the final product with some under-yarn.
Thank goodness I had a bunch of yellow acrylic around!
So that’s the A with Acrylic, and here is the A with the nice and thick wool yarn wrapped around:
The hardest part was wrapping the yarn around the enclosed spaces (Top of A, part of R, ALL of the D!) but it was fun at the same time. I had enough yarn to do each of them in a different color, because I just made hats with these colors (tutorial coming later) and it really doesn’t take that much yarn.
Final product on the shelf:
I am thinking about hanging them up too, but I really like the shadows off the letters.
Singe Singe (my sock monkey) got upset that he wasn’t in the pictures, so he picked up my favorite book (Monkey Monkey’s trick, which he is named after) and demanded to be in the photos.
So…
and in sepia, because it looks better (so he thinks…)
Overall, this was a really fun project.
I liked that is used up stuff I was going to just throw away.
The hardest part was being patient wrapping the yarn around.
It took maybe an hour, maybe a little bit less.
I like that I actually made something inspired by pinterest, instead of just pinning a bunch of stuff and not doing anything!
And the best part of making each letter individually? (It is not wrapping the ends…that was hard!)
It’s that I can have this word:
or, this one!
which can be good for the real life letter project!
I think this would be fun to do for a baby’s room too, as long as the baby doesn’t have too long of a name! (Like Kathy Ellen. that’s just not worth it, let’s face it 🙂 )
Love it Kathy Ellen! I am going to have to follow you on Pinterest. Also, a bookshelf for signed books?! How cool! I know you love books, so I was wondering if you have ever been to the 1 dollar bookstore. You might get your books for less, but they have a few of the stores in socal and there is also one in Santa Maria (just in case you might go there.) Love the color of the letters. I think I like them better than the pinterest letters. Hope you are doing well. Casi
Thanks Casi!
Do I follow you on Pinterest? I will have to look.
I will look into the 1 dollar bookstores…sounds good!
I hope you are doing well too, and I am starting work on something for you….hoping for a February finish!
