So yes, I just finished the DONUT DASH 5k race in my hometown (Plattsburgh, NY)
(read all about the Donut saga up to this point here)
And it was SOOO EPIC!
I even got my picture in the paper! Here’s the online version!
And yes, it’s Kathy with a K, but it’s still cool. That’s all the teaser you’re going to get…full post coming soon!
BUT
ALSO
Did you know in the middle of that,
on my day off from training in fact,
I wrote a fun little story?
Susanna Leonard Hill did many things this summer, including this fun series called Summer Shorts and Sweets. I went all over-achiever one week and did three poems. With all the craziness and coast jumping, I did not continue to make summer shorts or sweets. But I’m glad I heard about this last one!
A good old fashioned picture prompt!
My earliest memory of these was in Mr. Villemaire’s 5th grade class,
when we would write stories from Norman Rockwell paintings or pictures.
That was always my favorite part of the week!
Anyway, the story had to be 250, and let me tell you, the cutting was tough!
I had mine originally at 286, but trimmed it down to 250 exactly. Good training for a PB writer, right?
Anyway, here it is:
Title: Just Say it.
“Goodbye” I called.
Phillip should have known I wasn’t kidding around.
“C’mon! I’ll let you win at jousting.”
“Nope. Sorry.”
“I’ll let you ride Pickled Pony!”
“Uh, no thanks.” I mean, Pickled Pony’s ok, if you can get past the ridiculous name.
“Don’t make me jump the fire!” he cried, rearing back on Pickled Pony.
Now this I didn’t have to worry about.
He may be the king’s son, but Phillip couldn’t jump a candlestick with Pickled Pony.
It’s not really Phillip’s fault…Pickled Pony is plump from eating so many pickles.
“C’mon, have pity on him!” Fryer said.
Fryer’s pretty compassionate for a dragon. If it were up to him, Phillip would be eating one right now.
“I’m not having any pity until he does what I asked,” I said, standing firm.
I may just be a dragon stable boy, but my father taught me to stand by my word.
“C’mon, I didn’t mean it.”
“Just say it, and I’ll let you have one.”
“I have more chocolate.” Fryer raised an eyebrow.
“Nope.”
Phillip sighed.
“FINE.” He got off Pickled Pony and looked me in the eye across the fiery chasm.
“I’m sorry I said this dessert you invented, ‘s’mores’ was just something for commoners.”
“AND?”
“AND I would consider myself very lucky if you would share your impressive knowledge on the subject
and teach me how to make one.”
“Did you hear that, Fryer? He apologized.”
Fryer smiled and reached across the chasm to bring Philip over.
“Best friends still?” Phillip asked.
“Best friends still,” I said. “First, you need a stick…….”
I really enjoy writing up conversations as stories.
And I love s’mores.
In fact, this summer I introduced s’mores to people from 4 different countries!
Yes, I will accept the title of S’more Ambassador.
Off to update my resumé,
KE
First of all, Kathy Ellen, that is an awesome picture of you in the paper even if they did misspell your name! Way to go! Second, I LOVE your story! Tons of fun! I’m so glad you entered the contest, and please don’t forget to add your link to the list on my blog so everyone else can come read it! Thanks for a great entry!
Thanks Susanna, on both accounts! My friends joked that I would get my picture in the paper, so when it happened it was even funnier! Thanks for hosting these prompts all summer long…Otherwise I never would have put a dragon and a s’more together all on my own!
What a fun story! I enjoyed it! And thanks for including your picture from the paper…I’m impressed you could run in that costume!!!
Thanks Penny! I had fun writing the story and I actually had a lot of fun running in the sumo suit! It’s inflatable, so it’s not so bad….I’m actually considering running every 5k I do in it….it is just so ridiculously fun and makes so many people smile!
Way to go on the donut run! I did feel so sorry for Pickled Pony 🙂 and I love the introduction of Smores!
Yes, Pickled Pony….poor guy…well, at least he’s not actually pickled, so that’s a good thing! Thanks for stopping by, Joanna!
You kept me on the edge of my seat as you teased out the story. And the punchline was fabulous! I love the idea of the medieval invention of smores 🙂
Thanks Laura!
I think I just realized the only way I like to do suspense: with ridiculous endings! Everything else is too scary for me!
Hi Kathy…nice to connect with you via Susanna’s wonderful contest!
Congrats on the Run…great cause…and you got to eat donuts as well. 🙂
Love your story…I can see it as a book with the recipe for smores at the back of it…really creative and fun!
Hi Vivian,
Thanks! Anytime I can run and eat donuts, well, that’s a good day.
I would LOVE to write a book that has a recipe for s’mores in the back!
Though, I think my dragon stable boy may be a bit older than PB age…but something to think about for sure! Thanks for stopping by!
Great job with the conversation story. Very fun.
Thanks Diane!
I always want to write conversation stories….probably because I’ve read so many Elephant and Piggie books!
Poor Pickled Pony! Could he pick a peck of peppers?
Great job on your story and HUZZAH for your Donut Dash! Near me there is a Jingle Bell Run in the winter and WOW are the costumes ever fun and crazy!
Love your Donut Run picture. Glad Susanna’s contest introduced me to your site. P.S. S’mores are not just for commoners.
Love it! 🙂
