31 in 31 Official launch post!

Hooray!
Huzzah!
Sound the horns!

bum-bum-bum-ba!

Here’s all the info you need to know about 31 in 31!

What’s the challenge?
Read 31 different picture books in 31 days.
Yeah, that’s one a day in the month of October.

  • Read it aloud.
  • Read it to kids.
  • Read it to yourself.
  • Just read it!

My goal is to try to read picture books that were published in the last few years, but you can read any picture books that you want!

Why?
See this post for more reasons why,
but, basically, I love picture books.

  • I’m a picture book writer
  • a PiBoIdMo participant,
  • as well as a well intentioned 12 by 12’r (I see next year going a little bit better!)

I’m also that person who does not have kids but is ALWAYS excited to
talk to you about a picture book
or even read you one.

How do I participate?Β

Participating is SO easy.
If you can read, you can do it! (yes, that means kids too!)
Each day I’ll post about the book I read that day, and update my bookshelf drawing (you’ll see it later!)

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS

  • follow my blog, and
  • comment on the post about what book you read that day.

Want to tell us how it was?
Even better.
Can’t make it to the blog everyday?
Hey, I understand.
Come to the blog when you can and feel free to comment on days gone by to catch up!

Can I win things?
Yes, each day you comment with a book you read,Β you will be entered to win prizes!
There will be three rounds, each ten days long (well, the last one is 11 days!)
and you can win one prize per round!
(There are rounds so I can get the names of the winners before I meet the author/illustrators!)

Prizes include signed books(one per round):

  • Goldilocks and the three dinosaurs by Mo Willems
  • This is not my hat by Jon Klassen (personalized to the person of your choosing)
  • and Voyage to Bunny Planet by Rosemary Wells (again, personalized to the person of your choosing!)

And other fun stuff:

  • idea notebooks with a hand-pulled linocut print cover
  • “dummy” notebooks for all you pb writers out there. 32 pages with a fun lino-cut on front.
  • “Rockstar” linocut print postcards

Also, here’s a free prize right here:

Write, Revise, Repeat. Original Linocut print by me! Click it to make it bigger and printable!

Download this, print it out, keep it around, use it as a mantra…whatever you’d like!

Speaking of free, here are some fun tools to help you out with the challenge!

A little badge I whipped up:

Hooray! 31 picture books in 31 days!

And a fun bookshelf! (scroll down to see!)
I love drawing the spines of books and coloring,

I love drawing and coloring in book spines. The Golden Compass is in progress, obviously…

and thought you could have fun writing in the titles as you go.
I always loved those kinds of things in school.
If you want to play and draw along, I have a few versions you can print out.
SOMEONE wants me to mention that there’s a good looking sock monkey sitting on the bookshelf too.

Here’s the first, all colored in. You just write the titles!

All colored in for you! Click to make it bigger and printable!

Here’s one that just has the bookshelf colored in.

Here’s just the shelf and the monkey and top books colored in. Click and print!

Here’s a plain one, no coloring, if you want to get all creative!
Singe Singe says you can even go crazy with the color he is too!

Plain and ready to color! Click and print!

So, let’s go the library,
load up on books,
get our crayons out,
And get reading!

I’m very interested to see what everyone else is reading, so, please, COMMENT!
And then you can win too!

Ok!
Read and write Β and color on!

    1. Awesome, Beth! I love coloring too so I thought I’d give people the option πŸ™‚
My library is emailing me…literally! I searched through all their new titles and I have about 20 books on hold, waiting for me at two different branches!

Going to pick some up today πŸ™‚

    1. Hi Donna!
No, you don’t have to restrict yourself to just one per day if you don’t want to!
You could print out two bookshelves and go for 62 πŸ™‚

I hear you on the stack of books…I can NEVER get away from the library without at least 30 picture books!

    1. Thanks Melissa!
      On holiday…you’re lucky!
I read a lot and thought, hey, why not go for 31 days of picture books?

I’d love to see more blog posts on what people are reading….keep me posted if you do some!

      1. Looks good, Melissa!
If you don’t mind, head over to the day one post (I’m bored!) and enter this in there too, that way I can keep track of who read what on what day (in case I decide to do some epic stats on it someday…)

  1. This sounds great. I think I’ll do it,but I’m still overwhelmed with things so, I may just be a back wing participant. The prizes are awesome, but I will have to wait until next year to join the contest ful tilt. Thanks so much for offering such a fun contest and it is so beneficial for writers. πŸ™‚

    1. Hi Brenda!

Yes, I understand overwhelmed, don’t worry.
The good news is you CAN BE a back wing participant.
You’re entered to win a prize ANYTIME you comment on a post.

So even if you only read one picture book the whole time and comment that ONE time on that post, you could still win!

I like the idea of contests where you win even if you don’t “officially” win, and I think reading so many books benefits everyone!

Hope things get less overwhelming and thanks for stopping by!

  2. I’ll probably read the picture books but not come back and comment. lol
I’m one of those overwhelm people too with a sister visiting from out of state a highschool reunion, a family reunion at my house, SCBWI conference, Museonlinewritersconference and other things these next weeks. October is definitely busy. πŸ™‚ more than that, too. πŸ˜‰

    1. WOW!
That IS a lot going on!
Have fun at all of your reunions and at all of your conferences!
      Where’s the SCBWI one?
I got to the one in L.A. every year and love it!
So much energy and so much great advice!
Hope your busy month is also productive πŸ™‚

  3. Hi Kathy,
So happy I checked the 12×12 FB page (almost never do…who has time). I saw your post and came to find out more! This is right up my alley…or path to my library’s picture book shelves! Can’t wait to start…and hope I’ll be able to visit you every day with an update. I’m following your blog so I don’t miss a post. πŸ˜‰

  4. I’m down! I don’t usually need any challenge to make sure I read PBs because like you, I might not have kids but I am ADDICTED to the genre! But I can never say no to a challenge. πŸ™‚ Rock on!

    1. Awesome, Marcie! By the way, have to say I LOVED your post on the PB Academy Course! Very inspiring! And I know what you mean…PBs are SOOO addictive!
