No, No, I’m not bored already!
But we did read I’m Bored today!
Singe Singe and I met Debbie Ohi this summer at the SCBWI LA Conference.
And we knew we had to read this book!
Title:Β I’m Bored
Published by: Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2012
Written by: Michael Ian Black
Illustrated by: Debbie Ridpath Ohi.
In one word: FUN!
In one sentence: This book is so fun that I guarantee anyone who reads it will love it, want to read it again, and will probably go off on some imaginary adventure.
Favorite pages:
Likes:
- it is a simple, fast paced story
- makes you want to get up and move around and do fun things
- the edges of the art have a linocut/woodblock look to them
- the art is super fun and ADORABLE!
- the text is spread out in fun ways
- some pages have more illustrations than others (love the variations!)
- the blue “imaginations” backgrounds
- the book is essentially a conversation!
Learns:
- Here’s a good example of a “conversation” book. I have a few stories like that and I love the style.
- A simple story can be made SOO awesome just by amazing art!
One example:
The text says, “Kids can do anything!”
Now, I don’t want to give it all away, but there are FIVE different things that the girl does in that spread.
They are all cute and NOT boring.
And they happened because there was room for illustrations.
- Also, YELLOW SPINES stand out!
I KNOW some of you have read this one.
What did you think?
What did you read today?

Updated bookshelf:
Enthusiastically yours,

Hi! I haven’t read “I”m Bored” yet but it’s on my wish list. Today I read “When Blue Met Egg” by Lindsay Ward. I picked this because it was featured on a Perfect Picture Book Fridays blog a few weeks ago. Love the story and the collage illos. Put this on my 31 in 31 shelf π
Sounds great, Dana! I think I read that one…I’ll have to look back at my reading journal and check! Thanks for reading and sharing!
I read I’m Bored the other day when I was at Barnes and Noble. Very cool book! Love the trailer too!
Today we read Underground by Denise Fleming. Denise does wonders with very few words, and of course her illustrations are stunning!
Hey Eric,
Love that book trailer too!
And I really like Denise Fleming. I agree with you, she does do wonders with very few words!
Thanks for reading and thanks for sharing!
I absolutely LOVE Michael and Debbie’s totally-not-boring book “I’m Bored”!
Today I read a wonderfully touching book illustrated by Debbie’s sister — “Bottled Sunshine” by Andrea Spalding, illustrations by Ruth Ohi. I highly recommend it. Now I get to color the first book on my 31 in 31 shelf!
Hmm…Beth, I knew you loved I’m bored…enjoyed your blogpost on it a while back!
Bottled Sunshine sounds like a book I would love!
And yes, get coloring that book in π
Thanks for reading and sharing!
Hi Kathy!
I went to the library today and grabbed 32 picture books to start me off on the right track for my picture book challenge. If it was anyone else, the librarian probably would have looked surprised but they are used to me by now…;~)
Today I read The Gingerbread Girl Goes Animal Crackers, written and illustrated by Lisa Campbell Ernst. I had already read the first book in the series called The Gingerbread Girl and was curious to see how the animal crackers figured into the story line. I must admit I found the story quite cute and especially enjoyed the different rhymes that helped identify each animal cracker.
I’m really going to enjoy this month of reading…thanks for the challenge!

Donna, way to get ready with all 32 books at once!
I pulled a bunch off of my shelves that I got this summer at the SCBWI conference,
but I only brought home 15 or so from the library.
I’ve been burned on fines before…I just forget to bring them back!
Any book featuring animal crackers ALREADY has my attention!
I will have to check it out…glad you are enthusiastic about the challenge, and thanks for reading and sharing!
Read “no more diapers” to my daughter. working on potty training. also read her a bunch of eric carle books, but can’t remember the names. oh, and btw, saw the westing games at a thrift store and have just started to read it because i saw it on your blog recently.
Casi! Sounds good!
I love Eric Carle and The Westing Game is SUCH A GOOD BOOK!
You’ll love it.
BTW, did that sock monkey ever make it to you?
I put the package in the trust hands of my brother before I left for the east coast, and I hope it made it there ok!
I’ll check with him too, to make sure he sent it!!
Hi Kathy!
This is a great challenge! I usually focus on the older classic picture books for my participation in Susanna’s Perfect Picture Book Friday…so I decided to pick the newer books (2011 and 2012) for 31 in 31.
Thanks for sharing ‘I’m Bored’…looks like kids won’t be bored if you read it with them. π
Today I read “The Jellybeans and the Big Camp Kickoff” written by Laura Numeroff and Nate Evans and illustrated by Lynn Munsinger. It’s a story about friendship, appreciating the differences in others and using your initiative.
I did a post today and mentioned your 31 in 31 Challenge: http://viviankirkfield.wordpress.com/2012/10/02/october-national-bullying-prevention-month-and-more/
This is fun! Great idea, Kathy!

Hi Vivian!
Saw your blog post….and love your blog! Good stuff!
I’m happy you decided to pick some books from 2011 and 2012 too…maybe you will find some that I missed, or, some that my library doesn’t have π
I love Laura Numeroff…I’ll have to check that book out.
Thanks for reading and thanks for sharing!
You are welcome, Kathy…I’m up for the fun!
Kalena and I read “Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late” by Mo Willems. It was so much fun to have Kalena tell the pigeon “no” to all of his requests. Totally backfired on me, though, when Kalena decided that she wanted a glass of water- she opens the book, turns to the right page, and says “why, yes pigeon, you have a glass of water!”
No! Pigeon! You are not supposed to help Kalena get that water!
I LOVE that book.
I’m pretty much in love with ALL Mo Willems books, and he’s one of the few authors I’ve met TWICE.
I love that kids get to say “no in a good way too!
Have you read any of his Elephant and Piggie books?
Simply amazing and laugh out loud funny!
My favorite: “We are in a book” though, “I broke my trunk” is a close second.
Thanks for reading and sharing π
I want to hear Mo Willems do a reading, but I also love doing Pigeon’s voice, and I am afraid it may ruin it for me should I be lucky enough to hear the “real” thing!
Snuffle Bunny too!
His voices are really funny. I like that sometimes he pinches his nose to make the different voices. I think you’d really like him. I think, go if you get the chance. Also, an AWESOME book of his that is coming out tomorrow is:
Don’t let the pigeon finish this activity book!
Where you get to create your own book with the help of the pigeon!
I read Betty Bunny Loves Chocolate Cake. My favorite lines: “Betty Bunny was a handful.” Great first line. And “I want to marry chocolate cake.” I like this book because I love chocolate as well. And it’s neat to see a book with a considerable word count!
Hi Tina!
I’ve heard many good things about Betty Bunny.
I think I looked at my library but she was checked out…now I know it must be good!
Interesting that is has a considerable word count…and promising!
I am the proud owner of I’M BORED. My kind of story. Wacky. Funny. Well done!
Today I read βRed Knit Cap Girlβ by Naoko Stoop. Such a sweet story. The artwork is stunning as it is all done on plywood! Amazing textures! Ohβ¦ And my boyfriend worked on it. Highly recommended.
I’M BORED is very fun. I laughed out loud at the ending.
Yesterday I read THE MONSTERS’ MONSTER. A couple of folks mentioned it on Twitter, so when I saw it in Barnes & Noble, I couldn’t resist. The characters’ personalities make for an entertaining book.
Yes, Priscilla, I’ve heard about that book.
Way to read at Barnes and Noble!
I’ll have to stalk my local bookstore for it π
I read Brontorina, about a dinosaur who wants to do ballet. I love it. Just love it! π
I feel like I’ve heard of this one, Susanna!
Also, thanks for the latest short and sweet…now I’ve got a middle grade novel unfolding because of it!! π
