Yes, I know, one more picture book!
Singe Singe is working hard to take all the pictures and write up all his notes.
As usual, he’s a bit late.
In the meantime, have you entered
Susanna Leonard Hill’s Halloweensie Contest?
you should!
But you only have until the end of the day today!
I love these little challenges,
and I think I like calling Susanna
SLH ๐
Anyway, here’s mine, with a little sketch-a-roo at the end, too!
Title: Decisions, Decisions!
Word count: 100 (Yup, took A LOT of editing down!)
โDECIDEย ย ALREADY!” yelled Gracie.
โI canโt!โ whimpered Jonah.
โStop it, Gracie,โ I ordered.
โWe leave in TEN MINUTES!โ Gracie said,
stomping off in her witch shoes.
โLittle brothers are worse than warts!โ
Jonah and I looked at his handmade costumes.
Firefighter.
Bat.
Pizza.
Mustard Bottle.
โI wanna be them all,โ he said.
โThen letโs do it!โ I said.
Jonah became a costume shop:
a mirror hanging from his neck,
two costumes hanging on each arm.
โLetโs go!โ yelled Gracie.
โOne minute!โ Jonah grabbed paper, a marker, and some string.
โYour costume.โ
He hung it around my neck,
and I trick or treated as
โThe Best Big Brother EVERโ
A little drawing of the three, ย by the main character:
I hope everyone has a safe and super fun Halloween!
And, who knows what I will be!
Like Jonah, I have a hard time deciding.
This past week, on various occasions, I have already been:
Flash the superhero,
The Little Mermaid at Prom
and a sumo wrestler.
And that’s not even half of the costumes in my costume box ๐
Until next time, trick or treat!
KE
Adorable! I think “Jonah’ would have liked seeing a mustard bottle/college student at his organ recital with us a few yrs back – all participants were costumed, but the mustard bottle playing this grand instrument (BIG one!) was pleasantly pungent!
That’s so funny, Julie!
I would love to see a mustard bottle playing an organ.
I have to admit, I added the mustard bottle because I made that costume one Halloween. I studied and copied the real bottle, paying close attention to the ingredients, and then, on Halloween itself, I was too sick to wear the costume. I think it’s STILL hanging up in my attic somewhere at home.
Great job! Little brothers are worse than warts! ๐
Sumo wrestler sounds like what I want to be. Ha!
Yes Robyn, the sumo wrestler is fun, because you can deflate it and walk out of it! I had fun with: Little brothers are worse than warts too, even though I love my little brother and he’s awesome ๐
I actually DID see a kid dressed as a sumo wrestler at the school Halloween parade today. It had a valve for inflating!
Really creative idea – love your sketch too!
Oohh, did it have a fan? Mine does!
How cute…just wear them all! I love the artwork!
Thanks Penny. The art was fun to make ๐
That is SO creative and how clever to draw a picture too. I love the line Little brothers are worse than worts. Brilliant!
I just couldn’t help drawing a picture.. I saw it in my head!
Cute story, and the drawing is adorable. My son is very indecisive, too, so this spoke to me!
Thanks, Carrie. Don’t worry, the indecisive ones always turn out the best ๐ Just ask my mom!
LOVE your entry, Kathy Ellen – so nice ๐ What a great twist on the contest idea. And I love the sketch too. You may call me SLH anytime – it’s much less of a mouthful ๐ Thanks so much for joining in the Halloweensie fun and I hope you decided on a costume and have a great Halloween! ๐
Thanks, Susanna!
SLH is kind of fun and mysterious…I love your contests and need to get back into the short and sweets…they always inspire me and I have to work VERY HARD to keep it short! But hey, that’s a good thing in our line of writing, right?
Fun story, Kathy Ellen! I like that twist of wearing ALL the costumes for those little ones who are undecided!
Thanks Tina! That’s pretty much how I approached Halloween this year (I wore four different costumes!)
What a fun story, and I really enjoyed the detailed sketch at the end!
I love the picture and was touched by the ‘best big brother ever’ sign. Too sweet ๐
This is a sweet story and he does have the best big brother in the world!
This is GREAT, Kathy! Really authentic voice of a child who doesn’t know who he wants to be…hey, so of us are still deciding what we want to be even when we grow up. ๐ Love your illustration as well!
Very cute, Kathy! After Halloween, my kids are in major dress-up mode. All the costumes are out!
Ha Fun! I like all the costumes – but your entry is 1100 words (y’know they say a picture says 1000 words!) How did you think of a mustard bottle?
