Thanksgiving Reading!

Had a great time at Thanksgiving.
I brought the flowers (with specific orders about where to go to pick up the flowers!)

But my other contribution is kind of unofficial.
I’m the children’s coordinator.
Granted, these children don’t need much coordination.
Everyone there had a brother or a sister nearby,
and was used to playing and keeping themselves entertained.

Still, I had some ideas.
I started a Thanksgiving guestbook.
My friend hosts Thanksgiving at her house every year, and I thought we should make it official.
There were pages for everyone to sign, including prompts like:

Where did you come from for Thanksgiving?
(my friend’s son wrote, ‘From my room’ because Thanksgiving was at his house!)

What did you make or bring for Thanksgiving?
(sample response: “I carried the beans”)

One word to describe Thanksgiving…
(favorite response: Thanksgiving. Someone’s a bit literal!)

What was your favorite thing to eat?
(It was a tie between the turkey and the cranberry ice, a kind of cranberry slushie)
and a traditional sign in sheet.

Everyone filled them out, including the adults, then we’ll add in some drawings and pictures we took from a disposable camera that I let the kids take turns taking pictures with.

My favorite part
BESIDES posing for this picture….

Yes, that’s me, holding some potatoes that I didn’t peel (I’m not very good at peeling potatoes…this picture was meant to trick my Mom into thinking I learned how to do it well…) and I’m also wearing 7 different colors. Winning.

was when we came in from outside.
I plopped down on the couch.
“I’m kind of tired,” I said. “I think I’m gonna read for a bit.”

Now, I brought a bunch of my favorite pictures books for this very reason.
I picked up this one:

They loved the rhyming text in this one and the mystery of what would happen!

and started reading.
After the first page, I looked up to find that all 7 children,
including  two 12 year olds,
were squished on the couch, hanging on my every word.

We read half the picture books before, and half of them after the dinner.
We did lose the 12 year olds a few times, but I did notice that sometimes they’d just be listening, standing nearby.

It was about as close to magical as you can get.
And it was such a nice way to spend Thanksgiving.

Here’s the list of books read on Thanksgiving, and hope everyone had a great day!

For California kids, this one was fun. They were curious both about what went on over AND under the snow!
I adore this book. Everyone loved the pictures and the fun points in the story. One girl even said, “Well, at least he has the rest of the cake and the candles left…) right after the crow incident, and that’s just what Jack says to himself in the story. It was very cute.
They loved this one. Maybe it was because all of the children there could knit? Or maybe because it’s just so awesome.
They loved the ROBOT voice I did on this one. And lots of giggles when Bot read Boy the instruction manual.
They adored the lovely words in this book, the repetition, and spotting those sneaky rabbits on each page, including the last few pages to see how they…well, I won’t give away the ending!
Again, these are children who make things and were so impressed that he rigged up that thing for the chickens (they also have chickens!) They loved when there was the long picture and I had to turn the book!
They loved how realistic everything looked and wondered how they could do that with the bushes in their yards…
They loved looking for the hidden numbers in this one, and how dashing the cats looked 🙂
One of the little girls said, “I’m Bored!”
And I ran to get this book!
This is an out of print favorite. Basically there is a hide and go seek game going on with the pigs, and this one pig he can’t find ANY of the other pigs, EVEN though they’re in plain sight! That’s fun for the kids to pick out and show where all the pigs are 🙂
These are such sweet kids that when I read this title, they all said, “YES!” They really liked it.
Lots of giggling over this one 🙂
They loved the illustrations and all kinds of loud there are!
They thought it was so cool that that garden grew everywhere. These are children with gardens at school and gardens at home, so they loved this one. They liked hearing the author’s note at the end too!

Hope you still have some leftover turkey!
I just came back from leftover turkey soup with the Thanksgiving family…yum.

And where was Singe Singe during all this you may ask?
Sitting on the couch.
Being passed around by the youngest children.
RIGHT WHERE he loves to be.

Enthusiastically yours,
KE and SS

  1. What a great idea – I love your guest book and the responses! And you have listed so many of my favorite picture books – Muncha Muncha Muncha, The Seven Silly Eaters, Balloons Over Broadway, The Curious Garden… okay, I’ll stop, but I think we share similar taste in PBs 🙂 Glad you had a nice Thanksgiving – I think wearing a rainbow IS winning 🙂
