Ok most of the post is here!
Birthday party and game night and chili….oh my!
Likes and learns tomorrow or late tonight 🙂My day job is working with kids and teaching them about history.
So when I saw this book by Candace Fleming,
I HAD to buy it.
PLUS
It’s signed 🙂
We have the kids say some of these lines in this book.
And I think it’s a GREAT way to get a bunch of historical figures in one book!

I love Candace Fleming’s books–particularly When Agnes Caws and Boxes for Katje, so I’ll have to read this book too. Today I read A Very Brave Witch by Alison McGhee, illustrated by Harry Bliss. A perfect Halloween book, with a great twist at the end.
I love Candace Fleming books too. Today I read Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies by Carolyn Crimi and illustrated by John Landers. Henry isn’t much of a pirate since all he does is read and doesn’t do anything piratey. His knowledge from reading comes in handy when they get stranded on an island. What’s not to love about pirate bunny bookworms?
Looks like a neat book, as usual. 🙂 Today I read Nettie’s Trip South by Ann Turner. It’s based on Ann’s great grandmother’s diary of her trip to the South in 1859. She witnessed a slave auction among other things and returned home a committed abolitionist. “All I have heard of slavery seemed unreal until now that I see for myself.” I can’t even imagine…
I don’t think I’ve read a Candace Fleming book. Must set that straight soon.
Today I read THE DARK by Lemony Snicket, illustrated by Jon Klassen, 2013, Little, Brown and Company (Hachette Books), 561 words.
Holy cow. Many pages into this book and I thought, no way would I read this to a first grader, maybe not even a second grader. Even I began to worry about being in the dark. LOL But the story is so satisfying. Love it. For the older kids. Or gutsy, brave young ones.
OH! Papa’s Mechanical Fish. By Candace Fleming. I’ve read that and LOVED it.
Today I read “A Funny Little Bird”, written and illustrated by Jennifer Yerkes. I was pulled to this because of the interesting illustrations that depict a nearly invisible bird through the use of negative space. The story is a simple moral about learning to appreciate your own self.
I am falling behind, yikes! Today I read Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems. We are big fans of the Knuffle Bunny books in our family! They are so sweet and realistic and relatable to both kids and parents.
Today I read THE ELEVENTH HOUR by Graeme Base. I could reread this book tens of times and still notice something new with the verse, clues in the illustrations, mini-puzzles to solve, etc. A master of detail.
I’ve heard of that book but haven’t read it yet.
I read Police Officers on Patrol by Kersten Hamilton, a fun, rhyming, rollicking read for kids who like police.
I read “Amelia Bedelia Bakes Off” by Herman Parish. Herman took over the series after Peggy Parish died. I had no idea the series was still going.
I saw this at the library and checked it out after reading an article that was making the rounds about standardized testing in schools. The author of the article discussed a portion of the test where a sentence was read aloud, and students had to select the best picture that matched. There was a lot of word play and puns, and the author said there wasn’t anything out there in kid’s literature. I immediately thought of Amelia Bedelia and how I still remember her “drawing” drapes and “dressing” chickens. I am glad to see there are many books in this series.
I’ve missed quite a few days this past week. Crazy busy, but I’ll finish strong I hope. Then it’s PiBoIdMo! Yeah.
Anyway, today I read BYE-BYE BABY BROTHER by Sheena Dempsey (author and illustrator,) Candlewick Press, 2013.
A little girl is tired of the attention her baby brother is getting and thinks of different ways to make him disappear. Cute story.
Today, I read THANK YOU, BEAR by Greg Foley. This book is 183-words. I loved the simple text use to present the story. The illustrations are not over the top, I like that. I also love the mouse’s response depicted via the illustration.
The story is about a Bear who found a box and immediately thought the box would be perfect for his friend, Mouse. On his way to find mouse, he met Monkey, Owl, Fox, Elephant, and Squirrel who had something to say about the box. After conversing with all of them, Bear questioned whether the box would be appropriate for Mouse. When Mouse saw the box, he loved it and thanked Bear.
I enjoyed this book.
“Olivia Saves the Circus” by Ian Falconer.
