What’s takin it to the streets?

This was week two
of heading out the door with my backpack chair,
a bag of books,
and a sign.
This Sunday was a bit crazy, because it was also
the Night of Writing Dangerously,
a NaNoWriMo fundraiser in San Francisco
that we had to leave early afternoon for.
I packed up my books and skated down,
unfolded the chair,
and started reading.
I got one person to smile,
and a few kids to pause.
One girl in her stroller leaned all the way out,
turning her little head back to me and the book I was reading.
Here’s what I read this week!
(I read each book two times for a total of a half an hour reading)
The Story of Fish and Snail
by Deborah Freedman
Published by Viking in 2013
This book is fun to read aloud because you can do a different voice for Fish and Snail. And it’s dramatic! I had fun reading the part where they fight, the part where Snail calls for Fish, and, the SPLASH. A great friendship story and a quick and action packed read that also feels quiet.
A Home for Bird
by Philip C. Stead
published by Roaring Brook Press in 2012
This book is fun to read aloud because the art is so fun and colorful, and the characters are so dear. I love that Bird says nothing until…spoiler alert…the end. (And hey, you still don’t know HOW he gets to talk, so it’s not totally a spoiler alert.) The page turns are excellent too, and the story really flows well. It’s such a great story and resolution.
Rhyming Dust Bunnies
by Jan Thomas
published by Beach Lane Books in 2009
This book is fun to read aloud because there’s so much humor! Ed, Ned and Ted and Bob have fun shouting out things that rhyme with certain words, except, well, Bob…he’s not really saying words that rhyme. But WHY he’s saying those words…that’s the story. Again, expert page turns, and it’s very fast and fun to read through. The colors are so bright and eye catching too. This one is super fun!
123 versus ABC
by Mike Boldt
published by HarperCollins Children’s Books in 2013
This book is fun to read aloud because the two characters have such great personalities! The number 1 and the letter A are so funny interacting with each other. Everything is in dialogue, and the book moves quickly. The pages are filled with crazy animals and the things they’re carrying, and the fun escalates quickly.
I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean
By Kevin Sherry
published by Dial Books in 2007
This book is fun to read aloud because the squid sounds JUST like a kid! He’s so proud to be bigger than other things…and loves pointing those things out. He’s fun and bright green and pretty hilarious. I love the part in the book where you get to fold out the page too; that is always fun. I love the wordless pages too. When I read them aloud I point out the action and even make up some noises.
I think I’m going to keep doing this on Sundays.
Heading to the library for more picture books soon 🙂
until next time,
