Here’s a new project I’ve been thinking about for a WHILE.
It’s about thank you notes (if you didn’t get that from the project’s name)
and it’s simple:
I want to write more thank you notes.
And I’m going to keep track of the ones I write.
I don’t think there are enough in the world, that’s why.
And I love writing them.
It started when I was a kid, and I haven’t grown out of it.
Also, I had two instances that ended up starting the project,
both involving authors.
The first one was with the author Chris Guillebeau.
You may know him from awesome books like
Art of NonConformity
and his latest,
The Happiness of Pursuit
I loved all three of those books and jumped at the chance to meet him at Bookshop Santa Cruz.
Like I usually do, I made him a thank you note.
Here it is, in an Instagram post on his feed!
He was so happy that he asked if he could hug me.
Sure, I said, and was sort of geeking out about hugging this author who has written books I love so much.
I had a nice chat with him,
and soon met Jandy Nelson at Hicklebee’s.
She’s the author two great books:
The Sky is Everywhere
so I patiently waited for both to get signed,
and when I did, I slipped her a thank you note too.
She was so excited she hugged me also.
That got me thinking three things:
“Authors are good huggers,”
“Thank you notes are important,”
and
“People must not be doing them that often.”
I mean, if strangers are hugging me, that’s a pretty strong reaction.
Now I know it’s just two people, two authors,
that reacted this way, but think about it:
When’s the last time you got a thank you note?
Or wrote one?
I’m starting this project to look for those moments of gratitude in my life,
big or small,
to let people know how much I appreciate them,
and maybe to even inspire others to get out some stationary and write a little note.
In addition, I want to add a free art component.
I want to give away thank you notes for people to use,
either leaving them around for people to find or giving some away on my blog.
I may eventually even come out with some thank you notes of my own, who knows.
All I know is that this is going to be fun,
and I have a lot of people to thank, so it should be exciting!
I’m thinking I will make a stamp too, to put on the cards,
but for now, I’m just announcing it and continuing to create thank you notes.
You know what they say,
“Just start!”
