Intro in case you don’t know about the Sunday donut:
(it’s sort of like that chapter at the start of every Babysitter’s Club book that you can skip if you know the world already! If you know, just scroll down to the donut pic. That’s where it gets started!)
Ok, I just had a blast reading my friend Jackie’s blog.
She borrowed something she loved from another blog:
A heart to heart sort of post about life,
as if we were sitting down to have coffee together and just chatting.
Um, I LOVE THAT!
Except I can’t drink coffee.
I mean, I CAN,
but the world is not ready for that.
It would be like this:
So instead I’m going with donut.
I used to be a paper carrier, and we would get donuts EVERY Sunday!
So I’ve sort of been conditioned.
I’ve even got a nice little donut shop within walking distance!
So, imagine that we meet at my house, walk down to get donuts, walk back (chatting the whole while!) and then sit in my kitchen, chatting some more and snacking.
Walked with a cute guy to get my donut today!
Here it is in its glory!
If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that I really wanted to write one of these last Sunday. But I was in Madison, WI, frantically eating breakfast and then on the road, watching a Brewers game and heading to Chicago, so internet and donuts? Maybe not happening so much.
If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that my Madison trip was AWESOME. I got to see old friends (some that are quite young actually!), make new friends, play a lot of capoeira, and have many fun adventures. I went to a baseball game and saw a grand slam, swam in a pond, found an independent bookstore that ROCKED, and even went to the National Mustard Museum. Overall, super fun.
If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that I’m sort of in love with the app: Day One. It makes it SO easy to catalog your days with pictures and a bit of text. It’s like a tiny blog that no one but me gets to see.
There are ridiculous things in there, like the time some random guy told Danny and I that he has been living in this neighborhood since 1969 and we are THE BEST COUPLE (absolute truth, this happened!),
and pictures of us getting the couch in through the window (seriously, so proud of us!) but there are also little things I know I would forget otherwise, like setting up our furniture or the herb garden or progress in my office (it’s so close to being clean and organized!) It’s a great app.
If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that Day One has helped me share what I think about books. I’ll write a post about how I exactly do it (spoiler alert, it’s not hard) but it made writing up my Friday Book Report post really easy, and I’m even getting back into posting thoughts about books on Instagram! I don’t know how many people benefit from it, but if ONE person picks up a new book because of me, it will be worth it.
If we were having donuts, I’d tell you about our herb garden.
Danny bought new plants while I was in Madison, and it’s a bunch of green over by our window! We looked up how to dry out the herbs and now we have rosemary hanging in a bunch from our ceiling. It feels so good to have something growing in our house!
If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that the train ride back (from Chicago to Emeryville) was AWESOME! I’m going to write blogposts about it, don’t worry. While we’re on the topic of awesome things that will be blogposts, meeting Felicia Day at Bookshop Santa Cruz was great too. Coming soon!
If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that I’m excited to get back into a routine starting tomorrow. I don’t start work again until the end of September (I know, lucky!) but I need to get a routine back.
I’m not the type of person who does well with a lot of free time. It stresses me out. I have a lot of things I want to get done, so I’ll be blocking out time for things, getting back to regularly exercising, planning out meals, working on our budget (did I tell you we got a JOINT checking account? It’s getting real over here!) and all that jazz.
And, lastly, if we were having donuts, I’d tell you that we have an adorable nighttime tradition over here.
First, this: Danny hadn’t seen any Harry Potter movies or read any Harry Potter books. We all know I’m a huge fan of reading and Danny reads too, but he really likes watching movies. I said we could watch the movies, and, eventually, we would read the books to our kids, so he’d get to hear them.
We watched the first one, and he thought it was too easy for the characters to thwart Voldemort. I told him it gets real in Chamber of Secrets, and he believed me after we watched it. Then I headed off to Madison. While I was gone we talked of course, and he told me he wanted to read all the books. I admit, I teared up a bit. The next day he told me he bought the whole set! (The new covers, which, I’m happy to see, still have the original illustrations on the inside!)
So now, in the most adorable and dorky move ever, we are reading Harry Potter together. Well, I read him a chapter every night before bed. I do voices with English accents, dramatic pauses, and sometimes even the Snape look when Snape is talking (you know, when he sort of slows his speech down and then stares creepily at Harry? I did that to Danny. Since he’s not entirely used to the Snape thing, I had to tell him I was doing it first so he’d appreciate it.)
Here’s some Snape for you if you need it:
We have one more chapter for Sorcerer’s Stone, then off to Chamber of Secrets. We won’t watch any more movies until we finish the book that goes with it. He’s already excited that he’s getting more info from the books. It’s super dorky but also really sweet that we are doing this. Mostly that he is letting me read to him, because he could read the books much faster on his own.
Ok, phew!
Happy Sunday!
Thanks for having a donut with me.
Now let me know what’s going on with you!
What are you up to? What’s making your heart sing?
and most importantly, what kind of donut are you eating?
Bye for now,
KE
We found a new to us donut shop within the city limits that is open 24/7. The old fashioned bar with chocolate was a bit greasy, so I think I’d go with a cake donut with sprinkles.
I love that you guys are reading Harry Potter to each other. B and I did that many years ago. We also read “His Dark Materials” and were both puddles of tears by the end.
I didn’t realize you picked up the train in Chicago. You were probably only a few blocks from our old apartment there, and then you got dropped off across the street from our condo. Small world. I cannot wait to hear more about that adventure. I so cannot wait for high speed rail to come to California. I miss the trains in Europe, although I never could quite fall asleep, even in a sleeper car.
We spent the weekend in the OC so we could beat the heat a bit and go swimming. We had the pool to ourselves last night. It was lovely.
Today after having waffles for lunch (at another waffle shop) we stopped at a new children’s book shop on Balboa Island. She opened in the spring, but this is the first time we made it down there because parking can be tough in the summer, even though there are less summer people these days as people built the cottages up and started living in them year round. It is adorable. And like a dummy, I forgot to take photos. Drats!
