Sunday Donut #4

Intro in case you don’t know about the Sunday donut:
(it’s sort of like that chapter at the start of every Babysitter’s Club book that you can skip if you know the world already! If you know, just scroll down to the donut pic. That’s where it gets started!)

Ok, I just had a blast reading my friend Jackie’s blog.
She borrowed something she loved from another blog:
A heart to heart sort of post about life,
as if we were sitting down to have coffee together and just chatting.

Um, I LOVE THAT!
Except I can’t drink coffee.
I mean, I CAN,
but the world is not ready for that.
It would be like this:

So instead I’m going with donut.
I used to be a paper carrier, and we would get donuts EVERY Sunday!
So I’ve sort of been conditioned.
I’ve even got a nice little donut shop within walking distance!

So, imagine that we meet at my house, walk down to get donuts, walk back (chatting the whole while!) and then sit in my kitchen, chatting some more and snacking.

Here’s today’s donut 🙂
Cake with vanilla frosting and sprinkles. Surprisingly light!

If we were having donuts, I would tell you that my friend Jackie’s book came out this week! I posted a special blogpost about it, drove up to San Jose to buy it from my favorite bookstore, and even made a special card to send to her (you may not have received it yet, Jackie, but it’s on the way!)   I’m so darn proud of her, you don’t even know! And it’s a BEAUTIFUL book. One of the best contemporary stories I’ve EVER read. So, you should check it out, don’t you think? Danny and I already decided we will read it aloud together after we finish Harry Potter (We’re about 2/3 of the way through the Chamber of Secrets right now, so it may be a while!)   We took our reading to the beach yesterday; it was too nice to stay inside!

If we were having donuts, I would tell you that I decided to do ONE focus this week. Yes, ONE. Well, when it comes to creative pursuits. I decided to work a TON on the 4 for you letters, writing prompt worksheets that I started making sometime earlier this year. My goal is to get 20 of them completed, which means clean copies that I can scan and make copies of.

Of course I still did TONS of creative stuff this week, making tons of cards for people, writing notes to people, painting, drawing, you name it. But I DID focus on those sheets. And the results were great! I have ten completely copied over into clean copies, the other ten sketched out, a master list of all the questions used, and a list of questions to use in the future. It feels so good to get a big chunk of something done instead of a bunch of little things done for a variety of projects. I KNOW I will copy those other ten over next week. I KNOW I will make my goal. And then I get to come up with another one!   Some sketches of new ones Some completed ones!

If we were having donuts, I would tell you that my good friend Kim came over to see my new place. It was so fun to show it off to her, and reminisce. I’ve known Kim since I came to California in 2009. She’s been my friend through other relationships I’ve had, other jobs that I’ve had, and through all the weird places I used to live. Yes, it’s California, so young people can live in weird places. I lived in a shed sort of thing in someone’s backyard once, and also in the loft of a house with much older housemates. It felt so GROWN UP to have my own place. And any time I can talk to Kim is a good time.

If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that I had HOMEMADE POTATO CHIPS!    Shout out to my friend Jose for having us over and making them! I really think they are the way to go, because if you want them, you have to make them. They take a while, and the oil stays on the chips a bit more, so you can’t eat so many in one sitting. Oh, and you smell like oil afterwards, but it’s great.

If we were having donuts, I’d tell you I wrote five letters in one hour! Ok, that might not be a record, but I was proud of myself. One particularly beautiful day when I realized I hadn’t really been outside, I grabbed some cards, slathered on some sunscreen, and headed down to the beach. I sat on a bench with a pen and wrote out five notes. It felt so GOOD to get them done! And who knows, maybe I inspired someone else to write. I sat in a pretty high traffic area.

If we were having donuts, I would tell you about the newsletter that I started for Great Mail Day. I want to eventually have a greeting card/stationery store, probably online only, and why not start a newsletter? It’s through tiny letter, which I hear about all the time at the end of this podcast. Once a month I’ll be sending out a little freebie, and I’ll give you some value and fun each week, promise! And, don’t worry, I’ll be starting one for Kathy Ellen Davis, writer, maker, and overall shenanaginer soon as well.

If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that dancing has made my Wednesday. Check out some dancing
here, here, and here.

If we were having donuts, I’d tell you I had a great textversation with my sister this week, and I learned the name of my soon to be nephew! Can’t spill it until he’s born, but I’m so excited! He’s gonna be the cutest, I just know it! She’s due January 2nd.

If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that I just bought my ticket to see Elizabeth Gilbert in Santa Cruz, that Danny and I LOVE YNAB, and that I have a call with my editor next week. So, all good things!

If we were having donuts, I’d show you these pictures from the party we went to last night, celebrating my dear friends Melanie and Papiba. They’re getting married next weekend! The theme was hats. You had to wear one. So of course I took pictures 🙂    I went with the pineapple hat and Danny looked just like a composer in his wig. After I took this picture, I said, “If you had social media, this would HAVE TO BE your new profile pic!” Half blue steel and half “you’re seriously still taking pictures?” Loved this Dr. Seuss sort of hat!  The blond Mullet. So great!
Koi pond! I touched one! I psyched myself out WAY too much for it so it took forever. A kid came by and touched one in two seconds. Figures.

And, finally, if we were having donuts, I’d tell you that I came up with a new writing routine. Today is day one, and so far, so good. I’ll write all about it in my first newsletter, which will be out tomorrow! I better get writing it!

Thanks for having a donut with me.
Now let me know what’s going on with you!
What are you up to? What’s making your heart sing?
and most importantly, what kind of donut are you eating?

Until next time, bye for now!
KE
