Sunday Donut #8

Intro in case you don’t know about the Sunday donut:
(it’s sort of like that chapter at the start of every Babysitter’s Club book that you can skip if you know the world already! If you know, just scroll down to the donut pic. That’s where it gets started!)

Ok, I just had a blast reading my friend Jackie’s blog.
She borrowed something she loved from another blog:
A heart to heart sort of post about life,
as if we were sitting down to have coffee together and just chatting.

Um, I LOVE THAT!
Except I can’t drink coffee.
I mean, I CAN,
but the world is not ready for that.
It would be like this:

So instead I’m going with donut.
I used to be a paper carrier, and we would get donuts EVERY Sunday!
So I’ve sort of been conditioned.
I’ve even got a nice little donut shop within walking distance!

So, imagine that we meet at my house, walk down to get donuts, walk back (chatting the whole while!) and then sit in my kitchen, chatting some more and snacking.

I got a full donut today! The first time in a while really. I was happy to see that they had blueberry NOT glazed. Yes please.

If we were having donuts, I’d tell you about The Roadworks festival! We got to see a steamroller making prints right there in the road! We went with our friends and their kids and had a blast! I will do a longer post later (I know, famous last words but I’m really going to do it!) but here are some photos for now. We had a blast!   The steamroller rolling over the  inked lino block and paper Clean hands team came to pull the paper off!The finished product! So cool!

If we were having donuts, I’d tell you it was a big week for lettering and creating! I helped a 5th grader make campaign posters (she’s running for president!), made some art for a surprise present for my manager, created artwork for my mother in law, and finished up the formatting of lots of coloring sheets.   One page for the ABCs book we made for our manager’s soon to be born son…with a typo, and extra s. Can you find it!   I also did the cover! Pardon the grainy picture that I took of the computer; here’s the little drawing I did for my mother-in-law’s craft business 🙂  Zoey modeling one of her posters  Danny holding the coloring oneOne of the coloring sheets for the NaNo bonus gift!

If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that I’m doing the NaNoWriMO Night of Writing Dangerously again! It’s an amazing night of writing, friend making, and food! The money goes to support NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and the Young Writers Program. I LOVE going there and fundraising for my entry.

This year you can get coloring sheets!
That’s right, COLORING SHEETS! for donating.
Click here to go to my donation page.
And here’s the video where I talk about the sheets.

I’ve been working on these for a while, so I’m pretty excited.

More blogposts about them will be coming soon!

If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that I’m sad I’m not doing 31 in 31 again this year. In the past, I would highlight a picture book each day in October and encourage others to share the books they were reading. I LOVED doing it, but it was A TON of work, and I can’t swing it this month. I’m actually doing A TON OF WORK on many manuscripts right now, and I have to let that take priority. It makes me sad but it’s what must be done.

If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that I had meetings in Southern CA this week! The company I work for is based there, and I got to see all my coworkers and meet new ones and get pumped for this upcoming work season. It’s always nice to see everyone, and this year, our theme for the year is passion. Everyone talked about things they are passionate about, and it turns out I was the resource queen! I shared with almost everyone something that could help inspire them or actually get them going on their dream. It was fun to feel like I was helping them pursue their passion.

If we were having donuts, I’d tell you I had the most wonderful Thursday evening and night! I got to see my friends Chris and Byron (hi guys!) and ate at an amazing couple of places, and then listened to a great YA panel. Notes coming here soon, but it was really fun. One of the authors signed her novel to me saying that I was “walking brilliance.” I like that. Maybe I’ll put that on business cards.   My dinner at lemonade. Salad and an amazing sandwich with colorful cake in the background! One shot of the inside of the bookstore, Pages, in Manhattan Beach.
If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that Danny and I are gearing up for a busy October. We’ve got something going on every weekend, we’re working full days, and we’ve got a lot on our plates. But we can do it. We’ve done it before. It’s all about planning and communicating and supporting each other, which we’re good at. I’ll make sure that I don’t get impatient, which is easy for me to be when I’m stressed. We’ll be great.

If we were having donuts, I’d tell you that I’m feeling a little sick. It’s not strange; I nearly always get sick when school starts again. I’ve got apple cider vinegar water in my corner, so I’ll be fine. It is slowing me down a little bit, which is hard for me, but I’m trying to do things a little bit in slow motion so I can get better and not drive myself to the point of exhaustion. No one likes to be there. No one.

How about you, friends?
Thanks for having a donut with me.
Now let me know what’s going on with you!
What are you up to? What’s making your heart sing?
and most importantly, what kind of donut are you eating?

Until next time, bye for now,
KE

  1. First the donut: We made a little side trip to Glendora on our way back from Alhambra (to show B the artwork of Christian Robinson) and stopped at The Donut Man. Sadly the strawberry donuts are gone until next year, but that means that line is not as crazy. They had my favorite old fashioned, and since I asked nicely, the guy dipped it in chocolate for me. That was amazing! You can really taste the spices in the donuts there.

Sad about no 31 in 31, but I get how much work it is. Just reading 31 books is work. I am over 200 books for the year and working hard to start writing reviews. Well, technically my job is to type — the cows write.

We had a great time (per usual) with you on Thursday! A shout to Pages in Manhattan Beach for another amazing magical event! Anyone who is interested should sign up for their newsletter to know who is stopping by the shop next. (It helps to read them too.)

This Thursday, we are hoping to head to another beach town to see Patrick Ness, who we actually met at Pages the January before last. I got to interview him (with questions he provided). But he is one of seven authors who have won two Carnegie Medals (the British version of the Newbery), and back to back no less. “A Monster Calls” is one of the best books I’ve ever read on mother loss specifically, and grief in general. It is the kind of book that will reach in and rip your heart out. As such, I don’t recommend reading it around Christmas time like I did. I know he will be in the Bay Area this week before returning to Pasadena and then heading north again on the North American leg of his tour for “The Rest of Us Just Live Here”. I randomly stood in the right line at that YA (Monster filled) book fest in Santa Monica this summer and snagged an ARC. It makes fun of “Twilight”.
