THE STORY:
I grew up listening to
country music
and oldies.
That was what we were exposed to at a young age,
and I never stopped loving them.
I remember, in 5th grade,
we had to do a lip syncing thing for school.
We had to pick a song
and then lip sync perform it
in front of the class.
I went to a small school,
Chazy Central Rural School,
where my mom taught,
so there were only from 16-20 kids in my classroom,
and twice that in my graduating class.
Now, I was in 5th grade.
I probably should have been listening
to something cooler,
something from the pop station.
but I NEVER listened to that.
My station was 98.9, WOKO.
so I got up there and lip synched my little heart out
to God Blessed Texas.
I wasn’t really into God.
Or Texas.
But the song was so catchy that I loved it.
I had heard it on the radio a lot,
and it was my first choice, so I went with it.
I love that 5th grade Kathy Ellen just DIDN’T care.
I wish that 6th grade Kathy Ellen
could have kept that attitude,
because then maybe middle school
wouldn’t have destroyed her so much.
I continue to listen to country music to this day.
I’ve never stopped,
and now I’m becoming more proud and loud
about my love for it.
It may not be cool,
a LOT of people may not like it,
but I like it, and it’s all that matters, right?
I won’t make other people listen to it.
Ok, occasionally my husband.
I think what made me fall in love with the genre
are the stories.
A nice little story in three minutes!
If I feel like I want to shrink away and hide my love for it,
now I just think of 5th grade Kathy Ellen,
lip syncing this song that probably no one knew,
and how much fun she was having.
I owe it to that girl to love the heck
out of anything I want to love.
