#pb10for10: Berenstain Bears

Did you grow up reading the Berenstain Bears?
I sure did!
I know they can come off as kind of preachy,
but I LOVED these books as a kid!

Now that I’m back in my childhood home for the summer,
I’ve come across them again.

Here’s 10 that I really loved:

The Berenstain Bears and THE TRUTH:

Brother and Sister Bear break a house rule,
and, in doing so,
break a lamp too!
They spin a tale about how it happened,
but Mama’s not buying it!

This one makes me laugh; I love their outrageous lie!

The Berenstain Bears IN THE DARK

After Brother Bear reads a scary story,
Sister Bear gets a bit afraid of the dark.
But then she finds out someone she sees
as big and strong and NEVER afraid
needed a night light when he was little!

note: This was my brother’s book!
See his name up at the top?

The Berenstain Bears and MAMA’S NEW JOB

Mama has a job:
taking care of her cubs and household.
And she loves it.
But when people see her quilts,
she goes into business all on her own,
and the family life adjusts.

I thought this was so cool when I was younger.
YAY Mama! Get out there and show ’em what you can do!

The Berenstain Bears and the IN CROWD:

Sister goes down to the playground,
and there’s a new cub in town.
Too bad this one’s so mean!
She makes fun of Sister’s clothes
and is sort of a bully.
Sister learns how to react,
and what makes bullies tick.

VERY TIMELY with books about bullies being used in schools these days
to show kids how to react and what to do!

I liked it as a kid because I ran into kids like Queenie.

The Berenstain Bears and the DOUBLE DARE

Sister’s jumprop is taken by a bunch of bullies.
In standing up to them, Brother gains their respect,
And they want him in their gang.

Only thing he has to do is
STEAL a watermelon from Farmer Ben’s farm.

Reading this book today STILL scares me!
I was terrified as a child about the stealing part!

The Berenstain Bears and the BAD DREAM

Brother and Sister play with some action figures
and come up with some scary adventures.
It’s no surprise that these things show up in their dreams!
Mama bear helps them to see
that dreams can come straight from reality.

I liked this one as a kid too;
it was a sort of: “What dreams can be made of”
eye opener!

The Berenstain Bears and TOO MUCH VACATION.

This one is just hilarious.
I love Papa, and how he’s always trying to make the best of things.
Until he reaches his limit.

Another fun part of this one are the photos that Mama takes throughout the book.
Then they have a little scrapbook page at the end.
Very cute.

The Berenstain Bears GO OUT FOR THE TEAM

My family’s a HUGE baseball family.
We all played when we were younger,
and, I recently found out,
I can still keep score.
Like, the know the numbers of the players keep score,
if you know what I mean.

This one’s fun.
I love how it addresses the stress of trying out for a team,
and kind of shows that you may be nervous, but it’s not TOO bad.

Really fun how Mama gets a little riled up about a call too 🙂

The Berenstain Bears TRICK OR TREAT

Who doesn’t love a Halloween book?
This one’s fun.
The costumes are very cute,
and the bears learn that people aren’t always what they seem.

The Berenstain Bears TROUBLE WITH FRIENDS

Not quite a bullying book,
but a book about making a new friend and the dynamic not going so well at first.
I really love how Sister’s behavior is reflected in her friend’s!
A little bit of learning about oneself going on here.
And they play school!
Classic 🙂

The Berenstain Bears TROUBLE AT SCHOOL.

“Wait a minute,” you say.
“That’s already ten!”

Well, extra time!
I gave you one more!

This one literally scared me  as a child,
and I still get nervous as an adult.

Brother’s in trouble.
He got a bad grade on a test.
But he hides it from Papa,
and gets sick because of it.

A good lesson for cubs of any age 🙂
