Ok, so I’ve already been over how much I love this author. But this book….wow. I can remember reading it as a child and thinking, “That mouse is my hero.” When do you ever say that? EVER? But he deserves it. He’s so smart…I think I remember this one being on reading rainbow too. I actually read this as a bedtime story a while back at school, where I was overnighting with some fellow students. They loved the story, and commented on how nice it is to be read to. These are full grown adults! Needless to say, if you haven’t read this book, you need to. Now.
Reading Journal #38 is:
Doctor DeSoto by William Steig (link leads to exhibition catalogs at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art…there is one for William Steig and many others!)
I don’t mean to brag or anything, but I’m really proud of how this drawing came out (even though Mrs. DeSoto is supposed to be in there….hey I can’t do it all!)
Cool stuff:
- Doctor DeSoto is a good dentist. What animals would make good dentists? What animals would make a bad dentist?
- This one is just screaming to be acted out! (please no climbing in each other’s mouths though…that could be hurtful.)
- Imagine what Doctor DeSoto’s father was like.
- Make up first names for the dentist and his wife! And for the fox! Go crazy!
Coming up next, a chapter book! (gasp!) Yes, this proves that reading journal does read more than just picture books.
Stay tuned to see what it will be!
until next time, read and write on!
