I made it Monday: Making a difference on MLK day, and every day.

Ok, so I know it’s make it Monday.

And I did make a bunch of stuff this past week, including a t shirt necklace, a shirt out of a shirt, and finally took photos of a few other things I’ve made over the past couple of weeks.
But all that is going to wait, because today we are talking about

making
a
difference.

So, today was Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
I had the day off, but have been trained that MLK day is a day on, not a day off.
It’s a day for service.
So, when I heard the school that I just did my student teaching at was going to be open, I jumped at the chance to go visit.

Even though it meant getting up at 4 a.m. and driving 2.5 hours to do it.

What followed was lots of hugs,
“Ms. Davis!!! We didn’t know you were coming!”
lots of showing off,
“Look at my astronomy (Main lesson block I helped teach) book!”
and, most importantly, LOTS of basketball.
“Ms. Davis, you’re going to play basketball at snack and lunch recess, right?”
(The whole class LOVES basketball and I give them pointers!)

The day was pretty inspirational, I have to admit.
The 8th grade spoke the last part of Martin’s famous ” I have a dream” speech at an assembly.
We had a discussion about what Martin Luther King was fighting for.
And later I got a chance in a class meeting with the 6th grade to hear what their dreams for the world were.

They had to pick a card that had some kind of symbol on it and then say, “I have a dream…” and go from there.

My favorites:

  • I have a dream that someday animals and humans will be able to live near each other and the humans won’t build so many houses that the animals have no places to live.
  • I have a dream that people will just be better to each other and think of others more.
  • I have a dream that people will have small families because the world is too overpopulated.
  • I have a dream that more people grow their own food.
  • I have a dream that fewer animals are in zoos.
  • I have a dream that everyone has access to good education without lots of student loans.
  • I have a dream that  people were better with money so they wouldn’t buy so much stuff and then have to go into debt and lose their houses.
  • I have a dream that there are more farms, where the air is clean and blue and the grass is green.
  • I have a dream that no one wastes any more food.
Mine was a card with a thumbs up on it.
One of the kids laughed and said, “Who wants a card with just a thumbs up on it?”
Me.
My dream:
That people realize it is all about attitude, and the world starts to lean over to the side of positive thinking instead of negative thinking, and that people were happier with what they had and not so worried about what they didn’t have.
I got a bit tired as the day went on, but you could tell the kind of difference having me there made, and I’m NOT tooting my own horn!
The children were so excited to see me, show me all they had done, and, just talk!

By the end of the day, they had many suggestions about how I could stay:

“Maybe you can just stay in our classroom. No one will know.”
“Maybe you can get a job here next year!”
but, my personal favorite:
“Maybe you can just get a job playing basketball with classes at recess so they can get better.”
Wow.
What a great day.
So, my Made it Monday tutorial is about making a difference.
It’s a pretty easy tutorial.
How to make a difference tutorial.

Even though I had to get up SOOO early and spend about 3 hours on the road, this day was totally worth it.
Those children now know, “Wow, Ms. Davis really likes us. She came on her day off to spend time with us.”

They know I care.
And that’s how you
make
a
difference.
