Summer Shorts and Sweets week 3: But week one for me since I just discovered it.

Susanna Leonard Hill’s got this great thing called Summer Shorts and Sweets.

It’s a fun little way to keep writing in the summer, even if you only have a little bit of time!
I found out about it on my daily check of the PiBoIdMo and 12 by 12 facebook page checks.

But before I get into my entry, I’d like to share my breakfast with you.
You look a little hungry.
And it is Friday, so, here’s a special treat!

Ok, so THESE almond croissants are from an authentic French Bakery in North Carolina, and mine is a frozen one that was baked this morning from Trader Joe’s.

But I had to wake up at 7:45! (yes, it’s ok to gasp!)
in the summer! (which I try not to do, since I’m up by 6 usually for work during the school year!)
to turn on the oven,
AND
not fall back asleep as to burn the croissants.

I would have liked to eat all of them, but I have three other roommates, and these croissants come in a pack of four, and I was raised to share, so I’ve got my one here.

And a nice glass of this guy:
except mine doesn’t have an orange sticking in it.
I don’t think I will ever in my life do that.
If I do, I will post pictures here immediately and tell the story of why I did.

Ok, now that you’ve had some croissant (look out of the powdered sugar! It will get everywhere!) and some orange juice (extra pulp, deal with it!) let me remind you again what this post is all about:

This one is a bit mad-lib, a bit poetry, and a whole lot of fun!
So fun I decided to do two!

Friend
I am a friend
green as the first leaves of spring
With loving, all encompassing hugs
listening, caring,
behind the mundane, everyday existence.
High-fiving over every single success,
laughing on multiple occasions,
loving with enthusiastic warmth.
Like a lighthouse shining through the fog of life,
I am a friend.

Artist
I am an artist.
Multi-colored as an old paint palette.
With fluid, imaginative ideas
creating, scribbling,
through the flashing nonsensical mind.
drawing out inconspicuous inklings,
experimenting with endless possibilities
creating for the entire world and myself,
like a quick stroke of the paintbrush,
I am an artist.

ok, and then I was SOOO in love with my croissant as I ate it that I decided to do a poem about that too! And share it with my roommate. She agreed that she feels the exact same way about croissants.

Croissant
I am a croissant.
Golden brown as the fist tan of summer
with a sweet, flaky crust.
baking, enticing,
beyond the mundane breakfast fare.
sitting in powdered sugar,
dreaming of noisy Paris,
inspiring up better days,
like a delicious encouragement sent from God himself,
I am a croissant.

Whew!
What fun!
I think I’ll go back and do weeks 1 and 2 today as well, and maybe put some of my letter writing poetry up here too.

Until then, I’ve got to clean up this powdered sugar off my face.

  1. Thanks so much for joining in on Summer Short & Sweets, Kathy Ellen! I love your entries – all 3 of them! – and I hope you will go back and take a crack at weeks 1 and 2! I can’t wait to see what you come up with 🙂
