Mail Art: Surprise!

So in between all this picture booking,
I had a fun challenge from The Elevated Envelope exchange.
Basically I had to make a fun envelope for 8 other people.
And they’re making me one.
Only, I forgot I was on the list,
so I made nine.

Which worked out well for my friend Erin,
because she really got a surprise!

The theme was malicious surprise.
Now, I’ve never liked the word malicious.
But I’ve ALWAYS loved the word surprise.

So I decided to go with that.
My envelopes had a watercolor and collage theme to them.

First, I drew the letters on airmail envelopes.
Then I painted all higgly-piggly on ten sheets of paper.
From that point on, it was all
modge podge
tearing
and sheer fun.

Here’s what the envelopes ended up looking like:

Before addresses.
Here’s the picture I sent everyone
(if you made a series, you were supposed to send a picture of all of them together)
Here’s the view with my workspace visible.
Notice all the books and all the drawers of stuff!

Once the envelopes were done, I stuffed them with a few fun things.
I used watercolors and painted some white Avery labels,
and included two sheets, so 10, that people could use as fun address labels.

I wrote a little letter explaining what I made.
And I made nine little surprise postcards!
Can you believe I already had all these background papers ready to go?
AND I had so much fun hunting for letters!

Here’s the surprise postcards!

Easter-like Surprise
Markers make stripes Surprise
Purple Slant Surprise
Golden Ticket Surprise
Royal Watermelon Summer Surprise
Rusted Fall Surprise
Orange Bricks in the Sun Surprise
Red white and Blue Surprise
Polka Dot Surprise!

I had so much fun doing this,
I might do my own just randomly.

I’ve received three envelopes so far, and they’re all pretty awesome.
I’ll post them here when they all arrive.

Until then, I’ve got picture books to read, and ideas to have!
But it was fun to take a little mail art break!

Enthusiastically and Modge-podgely yours,

Kathy Ellen
