Reading Round up 2013, week 3!

This was a good week for reading. 27 books! Woo-hoo!

Reading last week

Also, Singe Singe found a great app called Pic Stitch, and has now found a way to put himself in the post more. He INSISTED on getting his picture taken with some of his favorite books this week.

Here’s the deal with this week:
All the books I read were SO GOOD!
I headed to the library and
RAIDED the picture books shelves after reading longer books last week.

Here’s the first four books Singe Singe picked:
Singe Singe picks, part 1
Beep and Bah by James Burks: Amazing. Seriously. I was laughing the whole way through, and I was thinking, “this is the guy who’s going to illustrate Tara’s book (yes, because Tara and I are on a first name basis in my head)…that is so awesome!” I absolutely love that Beep translates all of Bah’s “Bah’s!” Amazingly awesome.

Cindy Moo by Lori Mortensen, illustrated by Jeff Mack. Loved the rhyme and rhythm to this one. A cow who wants to jump over the moon! I could see this going REALLY WELL with Kitten’s first full moon, How to catch a star by Oliver Jeffers, Happy Birthday Moon…just a bunch of longing for space stuff kinds of books.

Princess in Training by Tammi Sauer and illustrated by Joe Berger: Dazzling! A sweet story! And tons of ka-pow in the artwork! I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed with a Tammi Sauer book, and I love how the illustrations have some comic book type elements, including some GREAT typography!

Little Big Step by Simon James. This book is just so sweet. About just taking one step at a time. The illustrations are very simple and endearing. Compared to some of the other books I read this week, this was a quiet one, but definitely should not be missed.

Four more?
Ok Singe Singe.

20130121-215335.jpgYES, I realized two of them got cut off.
We just wanted a bit of diversity in the picture stitching thingy.
We’ll see about it next week.

ANYWAY

Around the world by Matt Phelan. I love his graphic novels and illustration style in general, and this one was so cool. I loved thinking back to a time when it was a big deal to go all around the world, because you had or could do it many ways. This is the tale of three adventurers who go around the world in different ways. Inspirational, fun, and educational!

Old Bear by Kevin Henkes. This book has some jaw dropping art. If you need a book on seasons, for any reason, you need this book. I wanted to climb into the illustrations and live there. Even if it meant living with a bear; I think he’s a pretty nice one though.

Unspoken by Henry Cole. Speaking of illustrations…wow. Just, wow. If you haven’t seen it, you need too. Amazing what you can do with black and white, pencil drawings. And charcoal. But really, request it from the library or buy it, right now.

See you at Harry’s by Jo Knowles. I started reading this one at 10 p.m. one night and stayed up until I finished it. It was THAT good. I’m not gonna lie, there were heartbreaking parts, but it was such a good story. And there’s a diner involved. How could you go wrong?

Here’s the official run down of the books that I read this week. And yes, I know, there are some REALLY GOOD ONES that Singe Singe didn’t pick. You can’t blame him; he’s a sock monkey and I limited his choices.

I’m really excited.
Believe it or not, I’ve NEVER been in a book club before!
And what are we reading next?
The Fault in our Stars by John Green.

I held off on reading Seraphina because I didn’t want to forget anything, but actually ended up finishing it early last week. I may have to look back through before the meeting on Thursday!

And, since the widget over on the side there says I’m only at 29 books, here’s the truth:
Screen shot 2013-01-21 at 9.50.57 PMI’m doing good people.
And yes, that’s Singe Singe and I at Disney World.
FYI if you need a Mickey Ears hat that is sock monkey sized, you need to buy a keychain.
WORKS PERFECTLY.

Ok, well, I’m off to work.
And, after work, to the library.
I have a lot of books to return.
Note how small the to-read pile is, and how piled up the read pile is:

To-read, and read, to-return!
To-read, and read, to-return!

What are you all reading?
Also, I promise to get my act together and get a few more posts going up here.
There’s authors I met that I have notes for, (and pictures of with Singe Singe!) that I haven’t even done yet!

Sigh.
I am spending a lot of time on my writing though,
which is good in the scheme of things, right?
Right.

Ok, really going now.
Enthusiastically yours with a cherry on top,
KE and Singe Singe

  1. I’ve read a lot of these children’s books with my kids already, but I see a few we haven’t. I definitely want to get Unspoken since we love drawing here, and Nightime Ninja since my kids love ninjas (boys…). I really like Simon James’s stories too.

I’m reading Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret (finally). If you haven’t read Julia Donaldson’s books, besides her brilliant Gruffalo stories, I recommend Room on the Broom, it’s hilarious. Denys Cazet is one of our favorite too, along with Mo Willem’s latest (Goldilocks and the three dinosaures, very funny!).

  2. Eric, did you re-read Bently and Egg? I really loved it…glad I stumbled upon it. Room on the Broom sounds good…keep the rec’s coming! (Though, I can only put 15 books on hold at a time at my library!)
