My writing space

Every summer I sublet my room so I can go back to the East Coast to spend time with my family and friends who still live in my hometown.

Plattsburgh represent!

Subletting means cleaning too.
And my writing desk never looked so good.

I thought I’d share with you where I write, so, here we go!

Where I write
Where I write

I’m set up in a corner of my room with a small TV stand table and a smaller little ottoman chair to sit on. As one of my friend’s kids put it:
“You know Kathy Ellen, just because you write books for kids, you don’t HAVE to have all small things.”

I just like sitting at non-pretentious desks, that’s all.
Let’s zoom in and look at the anatomy of my writing space.

We won’t be zooming in on that yellowed out piece there;
that’s my agency agreement.
I like having it there, front and center.
Makes me feel like a serious writer.

Ok, now for the zooms!

Here’s one of the first times I signed my name.
And a picture of my family when I was 4 or 5.

A bigger picture of Mother’s Day:

One of me and my Dad at the beach:

Where's my bathing suit?

A cool card I got from my first stint in AmeriCorps that has adjectives that they thought described me. Sometimes it’s nice to be reminded of who I am, in case I forget.

Words that describe me

Pixar’s rules of storytelling handout. I like having it at eye level in case I have a problem.

Some good rules!

This postcard is a very new addition.
I was in Montana looking through postcards at a goodwill with a friend.
I came across this one and said, “That’s going to be ME when I’m old!”
And then I came up with a ridiculous goal.
60 by 60.
Yup, I want 60 books by 60 years old.
Even if I don’t reach that goal, it’s helping me with the big picture of my career.
All from an old lady on a postcard:

Actually I hope I look better than this at 60!

On my desk are framed pictures of a very important sock monkey
(a present from a photographer friend last year!)
and Yoda, in case I get too in over my head and need some advice:

Yoda And Singe Singe

Under the desk there’s books on writing and my trusty phone toy.
I can remember pulling one just like it around and around as a kid.
Keeps my young. And it’s fun to remember rotary phones too!

My writing books and my fun phone!

To the side of my writing area are two lengths of crocheted hemp, made into a little clothesline. I clip ideas I’ve written down on scraps of paper there, or anything else I think will help and inform my writing.

The one that has a permanent position though is this collection of poetry I wrote in 6th grade:

Even a writer back then :)
Even a writer back then 🙂

It’s got an about the author and EVERYTHING!
I’ll have to showcase it in a blog post someday.

Oh and I have this nearby:

Coolest typewriter in the world!
Coolest typewriter in the world!

It’s broken right now so I’ll have to get it fixed, but I love writing little things on it.
It’s just so fun!

Well, that’s all folks!
Where do you write?
What influences you?

Until next time
KE and SS

  1. So fun! Love your cute space! Mine would not be very thrilling to look at, since it’s my couch. 🙂 Most nights find me on the living room couch, clacking away at the keyboard. Sometimes I write at Barnes & Noble, and sometimes at a coffeeshop, but thankfully, I have learned to write at home (less expensive, ha!).
