31 in 31 Day 15: Hello in there! AND a giveaway!

Woo hoo!
Day 15!
31
Almost halfway done!

And another giveaway!
Today’s giveaway is this book:

An awesome book!
An awesome book!

I did a 31 in 31 post on it last year.
It’s a beautifully illustrated and written book.
And it could be yours.
I’ll pick the winner tomorrow.

Today’s book is really fun.
I’m the second of four kids, and we’re all about two years apart.
So that means when my youngest brother was born,
I knew a little bit about something going on,
but not much.

I think I would have loved this book though.
I sure love it now!

Likes:

  • I love the illustrations. Simple lines and great textures from the collaging.
  • The conversation between the siblings is adorable.
  • Very poetic and simple text and story
  • The flaps are so much fun!
  • Love how the Mama’s belly grows too.

Learns:

  • Once again, if you take an old theme and put a new twist on it, you’ve got gold!
  • A book can still be entertaining even when you know the outcome (the baby will be born, people!)
  • A big board book works! This book is sturdy and like a hybrid board book/picture book

What are you all reading today?
Anyone have a fond memory of a sibling being born,
or a great “you’re about to be a sibling” book?

Until next time,
KE and SS

  1. KE , i don’t know how you gave time to put together such detailed posts and work and other activities u r involved with. U r superwoman! Here are the books we read this week: may i brung a friend, Hey al, the snowy day, the three pugs , so you want to be president (we tried to focus on caldecott medal winners this week. We also read berenstaim bears and the ghost of the forest. Off to the library again today!

  2. I love sibling books! As I just had my fourth, my growing belly was a big topic all summer around here. I just read ZOE’S ROOM (NO SISTERS ALLOWED) by Bethanie Deeney Murguia which ties in nicely with your post today! It’s all about a little girl who has to start sharing her room with her new little sister. We loved it!

  3. My book for today is ONE WITCH by Laura Leuck. This 224-words counting book is written in rhyme. It is about ONE WITCH who has an empty pot to fill. So she went around collecting things to make a brew – 2-cats gave her a fish’s tail, 3-scarecrows gave her a blackbird’s claw, 4-goblins gave her slimy slugs, 5-vampires gave her blood juice, 6-mummies gave her a musty moth, 7-owls gave her a rattlesnake, 8-ghosts gave her a hunk of hair, 9-skeletons gave her a finger bone, and 10 werewolves gave her spider soup. Then she planned a spooky bash and invited them all. They all came, partied, and enjoyed the brew. And she is saving the rest for YOU-YOU-YOU!!!

    I like it a lot.

  4. I was at the tail end of the family — #6 of 7 kids — so I still don’t know about bellies and babies. Maybe I should read HELLO IN THERE? 😉

I “read” HANK FINDS AN EGG by Rebecca Dudley, 2013, Peter Pauper Press. Zero words. The story is told with photographs of a world built by the author. Hank finds an egg on the ground. It’s fallen from a nest in the tree, which is too high for him to reach despite his attempts. He cares for the egg, sleeping overnight in the woods. In the morning, the mother bird returns, and Hank devises another idea to get the egg back into the nest.

It’s a clever book, and much detailed attention was given to creating the scenes, posing the characters, and photographing the story.

  5. Okay, I was going to read my last bunny book today that makes me cry, but since you, Kathy Ellen, shared a new baby book, I decided to read both my favorite new baby books for “31 in 31.” I will need to get the second one at the library, but the first one I own and read today!
It is “Dilly’s Big Sister Diary,” an awesome book about a little girl’s most private thoughts and feelings about her new baby brother. As the title suggests, this book is written as a diary, thus really letting us get to know this older sister protagonist. I love how honest it is about her feelings towards her new brother. I also love how it shows her learning new things about babies and life in general without the book going out and stating what she learns. It gives the reader time to figure the sames things out him/herself. For instance, the book lets both Dilly and the reader learn on their own that babies outgrow their soft, pointy heads and pinched faces; they don’t look like that forever.
This is an awesome book for new older siblings, and I’d like to think it will encourage them to get their own notebooks to write about the new arrival in.

  6. I am a first born, and my sister, Alice, followed only a year and three months later. I thought that was close, until I met my husband whose sister is only a year and two weeks younger. And then recently we met a sister and brother who are exactly one year apart.

Today I read, “What’s Alice Up To?” by Harley Jessup. I found this randomly at the library on Sunday. It was published back in 1997. It is a sweet little story with some lovely illustrations.

Harley Jessup got his start on Sesame Street and then went to work in the movies. He is actually an Academy Award winner. He worked from ILM for a bit before joining Pixar. A quick search looks like he has worked on many of their movies including “Cars” and “Monsters University”.

  7. I would have liked to read this book when I was pregnant with my 2nd. My first-born was not happy to have a baby brother at all. After all, he drooled on everything. It took him about 3 years to get used to having one. Today I read another pirate book…No Pirates Allowed Said Library Lou by Rhonda Gowler Greene and illustrated by Brian Ajhar. This is about a pirate who is searching for treasure in a library and finds that the true treasure is the books. Been into pirate talk around the house lately and the kids love it.

  8. Today I read Isabella, Girl on the Go by Jennifer Fosberry. It’s about a girl with a big imagination who pretends to be various famous historical figures. I liked how she tied in some nonfiction in an interesting way without taking away from the story. Apparently there is a whole series of these books, so I will be reading more of them!

  9. Well, I have 5 younger sisters (and 3 older ones) and the most memorable was my youngest sister’s – I was a sophomore in college and couldn’t wait to hear the news to find out if I finally had a brother! But, I did not. The other thing that was memorable was that my oldest sister was married and pregnant with her second baby at the same time and my mom and my sister had their babies 6 days apart! (So yes, when Denise was born, she was an aunt to two nephews the minute she was born!) That baby sister and baby nephew just turned 24 this month. . . .

Anyway, the book I read today was MITCHELL GOES BOWLING by Hallie Durand, illustrated by Tony Fucille. Published by Candlewick Press in 2013. Loved it. A very cute story of a 4 year old going bowling with his Dad.

  10. Today we read a seasonally-appropriate alphabet book, “Apple Pie ABC” written and illustrated by Alison Murray. The art is so charming! We all enjoyed the book. It is unique for an ABC book because the brief text coupled with the illustrations actually tells a story, about a dog who is pining for a taste of apple pie. Does he find a way to eat a piece (or more)? Read it to find out!

A couple books for siblings-to-be that I recommend are “I’m a Big Sister” (or Brother version) and “When You Were Inside Mommy” both by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Maxie Chambliss.

  11. Those flaps on your book look fun! That’s a creative premise for this popular theme.

I read Regards to the Man in the Moon by Ezra Jack Keats, a cute book that runs on the imagination!

  12. What an adorable book for a soon-to-be big brother or sister.

Today I read THE QUIET BOOK by Deborah Underwood because it was that kind of day when all I needed and wanted both at work and at home was lots of quiet. Thrilled that it’s now available in board book form–already bought 3 for holiday gifts!

  13. Running behind, but I’ll keep on going. Today I read ‘When Henry Caught Imaginatitis’ by Nick Bland. The interplay between the sparse text and illustrations was wonderful. My 3yo wanted to keep looking back at the illustration where Henry flies up in his rubbish bin rocket ship complete with watermelon helmet.
