31 in 31 Day 30: What was I scared of?

Day 30!
The Penultimate Day!
31

Yes, I just used the word penultimate;
it was a vocab word I had in eighth grade that I’ve never forgotten!

Today’s book is a fun one.
The story can be found in the Sneeches, by Dr. Seuss,
but when I was teaching preschoolers, it was also available as it’s own book.

I love green pants,
and I love facing your fears.
So, naturally, I loved this book.

I think it’s a good one to revisit too.
Most of the time in our lives when we’re afraid of something,
it is a ridiculous fear.

Maybe not as ridiculous as being afraid of a pair of green pants with nobody inside them,
but you never know 🙂

What was I scared of?
What was I scared of?

In one word: Spooky Green.
In one sentence: What are you to do when you’re so afraid and obsessed with a pair of green pants with nobody inside them…oh, no, don’t tell me you have to confront them! (spoiler alert, you do!)

Favorite pages:

Ahh! The face to face? encounter!

Likes:

  • Love the first person. Makes us really feel the fear
  • Love how RIDICULOUS the fear turns out to be, but how serious it feels throughout the book.
  • Great illustrations and use of green of course.
  • Love the small size of this book too.

Learns:

  • Sometimes you have to face your fears!
  • Scary stories are fun when they’re not too scary.
  • Sometimes the thing we afraid of is more scared of us!

And yes, I knew all that stuff,
but it was fun to see this message in picture book form.

Have you seen this book?
I’m in a scary kind of book mood maybe, because of Halloween.
What are you all reading?
And yes, giveaway tomorrow!
I figured I’d save it for the last day!

Until then,
KE and SS

  1. Hmm, I’ve never read that Dr. Seuss book.
I read a book to celebrate–Halloween, by DK Publishing for the 0-3 range. Great illustrations and simple text to keep young kids engaged.

  2. I read the incredible BATTLE BUNNY by Jon Scieszka and Mac Barnett, illustrated by Matthew Myers. I had the pleasure of listening to the authors read their book in two voices yesterday, and I cannot get enough of it. Each read-through I see more details that I missed before and laugh at different places because of their insane humor. Hands down, best book of 2013 for me, and I’ve read quite a number of brilliant wish-I-thought-of-that-myself ones. Love, love, love!

  3. We read “Shape by Shape” written and illustrated by Suse MacDonald. It’s a very simple concept book that uses colorful shapes added in layers to create a friendly dinosaur on the last page. It’s basically another version of “Go Away Big Green Monster” by Ed Emberley.

  4. I have my prize book! Thanks, Kathy Ellen, for sending me Over and Under the Snow — and so cheerfully wrapped. It was so much fun getting a cool package in the mail.

I haven’t read WHAT WAS I SCARED OF? Never even heard of it. I’ll have to remedy that soon.

I just read SIMPSON’S SHEEP WON’T GO TO SLEEP! by Bruce Arant, 2013, Peter Pauper Press. GREAT illustrations throughout. It begins with perfectly metered simple rhymes. I was so happy, because as a reader and a poet, I’m a stickler for perfect meter and rhyme. But then — pow! — things went off kilter. Aaugh. I was so disappointed. The story itself, however, is fine. Younger kids will like it, and will identify with the sheep, who are the only farm animals who don’t want to settle down and go to sleep at night.

  5. I read “On Top of Spaghetti” written and illustrated by Paul Brett Johnson with lyrics by Tom Glazer. A sneeze sends a meatball rolling and the entire book is about chasing this runaway meatball. It also incorporates the song “On Top of Spaghetti” with the same melody as “On Top of Old Smoky”. This is a fun book to read since there is a song in it.

  6. I read “Mr. Peabody’s Apples” by Madonna (yes, the rockstar). I remember when these came out, but never read them. It looks like she actually published at least 10 books for children.

This one really surprised me. It was not at all what I expected. It is based on a story Madonna was told by her Kabbalah teacher. It is about the damage words can do, especially when you spread false rumors. This seems an even more important message now as it is even easier and faster to spread rumors with the help of smart phones and the Internet.

The illustrations are by Loren Long. This was before he wrote his series Otis series. They are beautiful and really present small town life perfectly.

I have not read this Dr. Seuss book. I had not heard of it either. Will keep my eyes open for it though.

  7. Today I read This Book Eats People by John Perry. It was really funny and the illustrations were pretty cool, but parts of it were actually a little too gory for me to read to my kids. Of course, they are only 3 years old, so maybe that’s the problem!
