I have a total of only two hats.
It’s sad really,
hats are so cool.
Here in California, those trucker hats are really popular.
Sadly, my hair is not thin and straight and blond,
and cannot fit under those hats.
I have one winter crocheted hat I made,
and the other hat I have,
a green Red Sox cap,
I can only wear on days that I don’t wash my hair
and it’s calmed down a bit.

But hats are rad, as you’ll be able to tell by this book:

Hooray for Hat! And Singe Singe is dressed like a pirate this year. Here he is with his pirate hat.

Love this little parade. And, see how HOORAY is so brightly colored?

Cheer up Lion. I like that he's willing to be cheered up but still concerned about his friend :)

Likes:

  • The fun starts right away! The endpapers are simple, with delightful bright colors.
  • The story is so simple and relatable. Who hasn’t felt grumpy? Who doesn’t like getting cheered up? Who doesn’t like parading? Probably someone, but I love all those things!
  • The different colors of HOORAY are a little thing that make the book more fun. And the repetition of Hooray for hat!
  • I love the illustrations….the colors, the cuteness, and how some of the illustrations require you to turn the book to see them correctly. Awesome!

Learns:

  • Simple works. Find something that everyone relates to, keep it simple, and you’ve got a winning book on your hands!
  • Format can really snazz up a book. Illustrations can be flipped to look at vertically. Colors can be used for texts. The book is a package, and many things can be done to make that package shine.
  • you CAN write a book in only 229 words! Bravo, Brian

  1. Looks like a cool book. We haven’t read it! I love wearing hats — I should read it while wearing a cool hat!

Today we are reading books by Susan Meddaugh (birthday is upcoming!) Martha Speaks, Martha Calling, Martha Blah Blah, and Martha and Skits. We also read one of our favorite Halloween books by Eve Bunting and Susan Meddaugh — IN THE HAUNTED HOUSE.

Fun day. Happy it is October!

    1. Eric, I could totally see you guys making awesome hats to go along with this book.
Or a play where you all dress up like the characters from it 🙂
I saw your post about Susan Meddaugh’s bday..awesome! I love how you have activities for all age levels.
I didn’t know there were so many other Martha books! I’ll have to check them out 🙂

  2. I haven’t read this one (yet). I love hats, but have a big head. My husband has an even bigger head. It is hard for us to find hats that fit, but when we do, we ask if they have other colors and buy those too.

    1. I have such a big head too!
I can never find hats that fit, so I usually have to make them!
