Tea with KE: Writing every day

Most of this post was originally a newsletter post!
More about that later!
First, the tip and story:

WRITE EVERYDAY.

Ok, I know what you’re thinking.
“Easy for you to do, Kathy Ellen, because you’re a writer, but I can’t do that.
I have NOTHING to write about!”
or:
“Yeah, everything I write is crap, Kathy Ellen.
I’m not a professional like you who can just write awesome stuff every time she sits at the computer.”Ok, first of all, NO ONE writes awesome stuff every time they sit at the computer.
And second of all, you have LOTS to write about!

Here’s what I do:

I made a goal to write 1000 words a day.
I stuck with that for a while and now write for ten minutes straight in the morning, as a warmup.
I write for even MORE after that too, but more on that next week.
I usually end up with around 750 words.
Do they have to be good words?
NO.
Do they have to be related to stories that I’m writing? NO.
Can they be any old words about the dumbest thing imaginable? YES.Why?
What’s the point of writing dumb words?

Because sometimes you’ll find some gems!

I actually started doing this as a teenager!
I have a document called Stuff that Needs to be Saved,
and it is, to this date, the longest thing I have ever written. It is mostly filled with horrible poetry (SO HORRIBLE!)
writings about people I THOUGHT I was in love with (that’s a whole ‘nother story!)
and silly silly stuff,

but there are great things about having that document.

I have a way to get back to what I was feeling then.
Not like that’s something I want to do on a regular basis,
but if the time comes when I turn some YA ideas into a manuscript, I’ll appreciate having that insight.Writing about it then helped me deal with that stuff in the moment.
This document was always a place that I could go to air things out, and I found it a great way to get to know myself too. There are gems.

Particularly this one, that now is attached to my email:

“Whatever I end up doing, it has to be something with writing. What do I do when I’m upset? Write. What do I do when I’m happy? Write. Since I’m either some degree of happy or sad pretty much all the time, I think that makes me a writer.”
Me, at the wise age of 18, on writing.

I’ve recently started up again and found the gems part to be true.I’ll go along writing some nonsense and then something will pop up that shines for a second.

Some examples:

“Sometimes someone is just right for you at that right moment, and sometimes they are right for you forever.”This came out after reading a book about a love story
that ended in a hard way,
which led me to write about a time that I had a relationship end in a hard way,
which led to me figuring out that I forgive him after all.
(I had been trying to forgive him for THREE years at this point!)

“I guess if you get attacked by a rooster it colors all your future interactions with other fowl.”

An observation made while I helped watch a friend’s chicks.
This launched me into writing down the story of the time,
one 4th of July,
when I got attacked by a rooster.

“I want to be the role model to the person who wants to try
SO MANY THINGS
but doesn’t know where to start.”

In free writing I was able to put down EXACTLY what I wanted to be!

There are many more gems that will become topics for future newsletters,
bits of ideas that will become new stories and projects,
and, on a sweeter side, bits of appreciations for my husband that will become notes or letters to him 🙂

Ok, I hope I’ve sold you on this write everyday thing.
But how do you do it?

Here are some steps:

  1. Find a method that works for you.
It doesn’t have to be on the computer. Or 1,000 words.
Just set a time and a place and a goal.
And, you can even change it!
For me, it was 1,000 words by the end of the day.
I started writing in the morning,
and finished up by the evening.
Now I like to have the ten minute time limit.
It keeps me typing and on my toes
and I get all my writing done in the morning.
  2. Have some prompts in your pocket to help you out.
NO ONE thinks they have things to write about,
but everyone does.If you get stuck looking at the blank page, here are some to help you out:Right now, as I’m typing this….describe the place you’re in, what you see, smell, etc.
What I really want to say is….you’ll be surprised at what comes out!
    I remember….
    I don’t remember…
    Today I’m excited about…
    I just can’t wait….(to be king? maybe!)
    I love…
    I hate…
    I want…
    I don’t want…
And if all else fails, just type, “I have nothing to write about, I have nothing to write about,”
over and over until you get fed up and remember something to say!
  3. Celebrate when you hit your goal,
and give it a few days before looking back for your gems.
    You’ll find something, I promise!

If you give this a try, let me know!

Are there any questions you want to ask me?
Or things I do that you want to learn about?
I’m here for you; let me know and I’ll write about it!

Until next time,
remember:

Writing everyday can lead to some great gems.

Cheers and Bye for Now!
KEP.S. Like I said earlier, this post was originally a newsletter, with some added content. It was sent out last week! If you want to get in on that, and maybe get some tea in the mail (it’s true, it could happen!) subscribe here 🙂
