I made it monday: T-shirt reuse.

So yes, I’ve made a lot of things this past week.
Working on a crochet project, made a fold out tree (an idea from pinterest) and, most importantly, have been making my very healthy lunch every day.

But I also made some t-shirt related stuff.
I really like the look of the t shirt fabric when it gets curled over, and used some to make a bracelet and a kind of necklace/ scarf deal.

So,
how to make assorted things with t shirts, including a bracelet and a necklace thingy.

Here’s how they turned out:

here's the necklace! Goes great with other brightly colored things, as you can see 🙂

And the bracelet:

Here's the bracelet!

So, there are tons of tutorials on how to do this online.
I’ll just quickly share what I did.

  1. rummaged through old t shirts and cut the bottoms off, basically leaving just from the sleeves up)
  2. Picked a few colors I liked best.
  3. Made sure the t shirt wasn’t folded funky or anything and cut strips. Didn’t really measure here, but 3/4 of an inch is pretty good.
  4. used regular scissors and didn’t get an even cut, but didn’t care.
  5. Took the pieces (thin, long loops) and pulled until they became longer and started to curl around a bit. (This part is really cool and hides the cut edges!)
  6. Combined many strands, or, in the case of the bracelet, used one strand to make something.

Two things I will consider before doing this again:

  1.  The width of the shirt. Since these were shirts worn by me at some point, the width was not big enough that I could wrap the necklace around my neck twice. Also, it’s nice if the widths are different, and then different colors will fall in different sections when you wear it.
  2. I’ll look to see how many seams the shirt has. Some have one side seam, others have two. For this, you only want one if you can manage it, but two seams is kind of funky. That’s what happened with the bracelet, and why there are little seam places in it that aren’t that curled up.
Here’s what I think about t shirt reuse though:
a big thumbs up!
Thumbs up for t shirt reuse!

I have been wearing the bracelet every day…I just like the daily splash of color!
I have a great idea and a new way to use these t-shirt strands….just bought part of what I need to make it happen, and hopefully it will be done soon!

I’ll keep you posted!

well, run off to your closet and get creating with t-shirts!
Can you think of any other ways to use these?
Something with mason jars, I’m sure…
