Reading Roundup 2013, Week 11.

Ok, not the BEST week.
But I think I got a lot of reading in.
This week, 7 books.
Yup, just 7.

Reading last week
This made me think about my typical day and when I can find time for reading.
So here’s the typical weekday:

5:45 Wake up.

6:15 Get in the car and drive to work.

7:30 Arrive at work, unpack and set up

8:30-11 Complete one work program with a class

11-11:30 Eat lunch and get ready for the next program

11:30-2 Complete another program with a class.

2-2:30 pack up at work

2:30-4 drive back home

4-6 help teach kids 8 and under capoeira

6-7:30 take the adults capoeira class

7:30-8 drive home

8-? free time.

Ok so that’s the busiest day.
Basically things just change if I only have one program,
if I’m closer to the school,
and if I just go to capoeira instead of teach.

Weekends are a different beast, but usually when I catch up on stuff.
And, I know, I don’t even have KIDS.
I think I’m too busy.

When I wrote that down I realized I do a lot of reading,
and I like that I spent a lot of free time doing that.

I looked at this past week and realized I still felt really tired,
had the poetry tournament,
and was waiting on some writing stuff.

So I thought,
“Yay, Kathy Ellen. 7 books is really good.”

Anyway, here’s what I read:

Screen shot 2013-03-19 at 6.34.43 PM The Big Road Race is really fun! I used to read it ALL THE TIME when I was teaching 2 year olds.
They loved the colors, the rhyme, and the pictures.
It’s a sweet story!

Dodsworth is awesome.
It’s a super fun early reader with short little chapters and great pictures.
In this one, we get to see how Dodsworth meets Duck.
They go on subsequent adventures, to Rome (read that one first a few weeks back)
and in Paris (which you’ll see later in the next pictures.)

Screen shot 2013-03-19 at 6.34.32 PM Skippyjon Jones and the Big Bones: Skippyjon is so fun.
You can’t read this book without wanting to sing along, clap, and do fun, ridiculous things.
And this one has dinosaurs.
So, quadruple win.

Dodsworth in Paris. See above. Again, another amazing book!
Screen shot 2013-03-19 at 6.34.25 PMSurfer Chick: I wanted to see if there was a picture book about surfing.
This one is really cute, and Henry Cole is an AMAZING illustrator of course.
I thought the story was really cute, but I wanted more conflict before the resolution.
I wonder if anyone else has read it and what you guys would think.

Summer of the Gypsy Moths by Sara Pennypacker is a GREAT book.
I have a lot of Clementines out from the library that I need to read,
but I heard REALLY good things about this book,
so when I saw it at the library, I HAD to get it.
Read it all the way through in one day.
It’s a sweet story about two girls, one summer, and four cottages.
You’ll like it. Really.

Liar and Spy: I love everything that Rebecca Stead writes.
First Light, amazing. When you Reach Me, C’mon, it won a Newbery!
This one is great too!
A really fun mystery, a great story of friendship…another one that you’ll read in one sitting.

So, that’s this past week.
This upcoming week is lookin’ good for reading (I think)
I’m going to be working for my brother again,
I have a pretty full work week,
but I like reading.

So I’m gonna do it more!

So what are you guys reading this week?
I think I’m gonna dive back into picture books, so hit me with some recommendations!

until next time, we’re gonna be reading!

  1. Kathy – 7 books are better than no books! I love reading SkippyJon Jones too!

We read some Bill Martin Books this week and ZEPHYR TAKES FLIGHT by Steve Light. This coming week is going to be a little of mystery — lots of books to read from the library and we just hit a used book sale so I am sure we will be reading the books the kids picked out! Have a good week!
