Kidlit Tea Party, January 2015

Hi everyone!
kidlit tea party

Kidlit Tea Party time!
Not sure what it is?

Last month, my goal was:
to write or revise for 30 minutes a day,
or #WriteDaily30 if you’re on twitter.
It’s a challenge Linda Urban came up with.
Her post about it is here, mine is here.

And how did I do?
Um…I was going STRONG for a few weeks there, then fell off the wagon, then got back on the wagon for a few days. I should have known it would happen; the last week before vacation is literally the hardest time of year for my work, and usually my health. As usual, I got sick and then overwhelmed with Christmas stuff.

But here’s the good news,
which I tweeted about a few times:

I would not have revised NEARLY that much had I not done the challenge.

So really, I’m a winner šŸ™‚
I also had a GREAT chat with my awesome agent, Lara Perkins,
where we pretty much mapped out our strategy of submission and revision and tackled some stories that have been giving me revision troubles. It was awesome!

Thanks to #WriteDaily30, I’ve got 4 revised manuscripts ready to go!

This month,
my goal is simple.
I’ve got a story with a fun character that we’re not sure about.
We LOVE the character, but we’re not sure where his story REALLY is…is it in picture books, or chapter books? The only answer is to get to know him better, so that’s what I’m doing. Writing from his point of view, picturing him and the place he lives…really diving in deep with this guy. I’m hoping he becomes such an amazing character that he gets a series, so this work is totally worth it!

So, what are your goals for January?
Share them below for a chance to win a prize.
New this year: I’m going to tell you the prize ahead of time, so I’ll end up getting it to you on time!
This month I have a signed book jacket illustration by Maggie Stiefvater. It’s supposed to go with her book, Sinner. I met her at the LASCBWI Conference, and got an extra signed because I knew I wanted to give it away. I’ll roll it up and mail it in a little tube. It will be AWESOME!

People who shared their goal for December, how did you do?

Also, yes, I feel like I need to hire a prize fairy, because I’m HORRIBLE about getting to the post office, but I RESOLVE to get better at that this year.

I have a handlettered quote coming your way for October (yes, embarrassing that it was so long ago!) Jackie and Chris.

I’m placing the order for cool reading related buttons for the November people who played along.

And for December peeps, I’m sending you something I’m finishing up work on today. It’s going to be fun šŸ™‚

Ok, let’s do this 2015!
Hope everyone is having an awesome January so far,

KE

  1. From last month:
“December goals: Iā€™m really going to try to write 1k words a day. Iā€™m going to TRY SO HARD.”

Update: I did it! (Or mostly did it. I take Mondays off.)

For January: continue to write 1k words a day (minus Mondays), read a book of poetry (Polar by Dobby Gibson), read at least two YA books.

  2. I apologize that this is so very late.

I did managed to read 215 books for the year, beating my goal of 200. And if you believe Goodreads, I turned over 20,000 pages. I read a lot more YA this year thanks to the nominations for the National Book Awards. I also read more chapter books too. It still feels like there were so many books to read.

Beyond sending over 100 Christmas cards, I fell short on my writing goals. I am disappointed, but keep at it.

For January, I would like to read 20 books (with my goal set at 150 books for the year). I would like to attend one author event. And I would like to write at least 1 blog post.
